2025 Tropical Cyclone Alfred - recovery operation

The Tropical Cyclone Alfred, starting on 1 March 2025, is a significant weather event in Australia. The Queensland Government is providing assistance to flood-affected communities through the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA). TC Alfred formed in the Coral Sea, reaching Category 4 strength before weakening to Category 1 and then re-intensifying to Category 2. It caused beach erosion, destructive winds, and rain in coastal Southeast Queensland.

By Sunday, 9 March, Ex-TC Alfred had weakened to a tropical low causing wind, rain, and flash flooding across the region.

The Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA) by the Australian, state, and territory governments offer financial aid to natural disaster-declared areas. Assistance has been activated for communities affected by Tropical Cyclone Alfred starting March 1, 2025.

The funding includes standard DRFA assistance and exceptional circumstances packages for recovery from the cyclone. A business case will be prepared for extraordinary assistance under DRFA, support will be provided by QRA Recovery and Resilience Officers to councils for local recovery plans, and QRA will coordinate with Functional Recovery Groups for state recovery planning.

Local recovery plans are being developed in collaboration with councils. For eligibility and support regarding disaster recovery funding, contact the Queensland Government Community Recovery Hotline at 1800 173 349 or visit their website. Media statements have been released regarding council cyclone recovery packages in response to Tropical Cyclone Alfred.

March Safety Topics:  Key Workplace Safety Topics for the Month

This is a summary of March safety topics by hseblog.com on Google

March Safety Topics: Key Workplace Safety Initiatives

March is a pivotal month for workplace safety, as it marks the transition from winter to spring, bringing new hazards and awareness campaigns. Key safety topics to focus on this month include:

  1. Workplace Eye Wellness Month: Emphasizes the importance of eye safety to reduce workplace-related eye injuries. Over 2,000 eye injuries occur daily in the U.S., with 90% preventable through proper protection.
  2. National Ladder Safety Month: Aims to reduce falls and injuries from improper ladder use. Ladder-related falls cause over 300 fatalities and 20,000 injuries annually.
  3. National Poison Prevention Week (March 17–23): Raises awareness about chemical exposure hazards, with over 2.1 million poisoning cases reported annually.
  4. Brain Injury Awareness Month: Focuses on preventing traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) at work, with falls accounting for nearly half of workplace-related TBIs.
  5. Sleep Awareness Week (March 14–21): Highlights the importance of rest and recovery for workplace safety, as fatigue and sleep deprivation are major causes of accidents.
  6. Slips, Trips, and Falls Prevention: Addresses the increased risk of slips, trips, and falls due to melting snow and spring rains.
  7. Severe Weather Preparedness: Ensures workforce readiness for emergencies caused by severe weather events like tornadoes and heavy rains.
  8. Fire Safety and Prevention: Fires cause significant damage and injuries, so it's important to maintain fire extinguishers, conduct drills, train on the PASS method, and inspect electrical panels.

  9. Electrical Safety Awareness: Electrical hazards cause many fatalities, so it's crucial to inspect power cords, avoid overloading circuits, follow Lockout/Tagout procedures, and use PPE.

  10. Ergonomics and Workplace Safety: Poor ergonomics lead to costly injuries, so it's important to adjust workstations, encourage breaks, train on lifting techniques, and invest in ergonomic equipment. March is a great time to promote safety initiatives, ensuring a safer and more productive work environment.

By emphasizing these topics, employers can foster a safer work environment and ensure the well-being of their employees.
