Links eNewsletter - Term 4 Week 4 Dear valued member of the PLC community, A Message From the Deputy PrincipalIn my time at PLC, I’ve seen hundreds of students graduate and go on to have highly successful careers in their chosen fields. It is always such a pleasure to hear news of their current projects, and this was especially so in the case of Alice Roden (2019). I was thrilled to hear that Alice will be exhibiting her creations at the 2021 Melbourne Fashion Week this November. After displaying quite an extraordinary potential in Textiles at school with her visionary designs, Alice was accepted into the highly competitive Whitehouse Institute of Design. During Melbourne Fashion Week, she will be exhibiting “Neo future” - a three-body collection inspired by archetype underwear as outerwear and futuristic science fiction aesthetics. I strongly believe that there are many different forms of success and that young people being personally successful in a way that aligns with their own values, passions, and skills is extremely important. Alice is one such Old Collegian who is fulfilling her individual potential and thriving in a way that is true to herself. Serendipitously, last week we also had another sewing-related success story. Viveca Rains, the grandmother to current Year 6 student, Lola, kindly donated her brand new overlocker to the School. This generosity was very much appreciated and we hope her machine will play a part in more students finding and pursing their passions. - Chris Robinson – Deputy Principal Update on the Head of SportI would like to extend our congratulations to our new Head of Sport, Nat Medhurst, who discovered soon after starting in this role that she is pregnant with her second child. Nat will be taking some leave next year for the birth and we have approached our internal staff for expressions of interest in the role, which we expect will be for a short term. We will advise parents prior to Nat taking leave. Director of Wellbeing, Chonny James, will oversee the 2022 rowing season. Since she has been at PLC, I have been extremely impressed with Nat’s ideas and strategic thinking and I have every confidence she will continue to grow our sporting programme and we will see it develop from strength to strength. - Cate Begbie – Principal Year 4 JIGSSA AthleticsOn Tuesday, our Year 4 students headed to McGillivray Oval to try their best in a number of events for the Year 4 JIGSSA Athletics Carnival. 60m Hurdles, Tunnel ball, Sprints, Leader ball, Relays, Turbo Javelin, Long Jump and Long Throw were the fun activities students were able to compete in. There were smiles, great weather, PLC spirit, and terrific efforts in all events. Well done to all the students and staff for a wonderfully successful event. Rescheduled Athletics – Monday 29 NovemberOn Monday, I was overjoyed to be able to announce a rescheduled day for our Inter-house Athletics Carnival. The Carnival will take place on Monday 29 November at McGillivray Oval at the UWA Sports Park. As I indicated previously, there was a great deal that needed to work in our favour to be able to reschedule this Canival. My sincere thanks to Jenny Rickwood, Katy Howes, Anna Turnsek-James, Emily Smrcek and a team of very capable and motivated parent volunteers for getting the Carnival up and going again. I am sure it will be a spectacular day.
