THROWBACK THURSDAY Villers Brett, 33 High Street, Strathfield This cottage was built on Lot 96 of the Emerald Hills Estate in 1914 by George Lusted. After WWI it was purchased by (Patrick) James McCourt and his wife, Hilda. McCourt had enlisted with the 1st Light Horse Regiment in 1915, aged 18, and served with several artillery brigades in France. After the village of Villers-Bretonneux was captured by the Germans on 23-24 April 1918, two Australian brigades were given the task of taking it back. Their surprise night-time attack began on 24 April. By dawn on Anzac Day, the AIF had succeeded but 1200 Australian lives had been lost.
