In the headlines: Tackling drop-outs |

A new report reveals that while South Africa’s matric pass rate reached a historic 87,3% in 2024, the retention rate for students dropped to just 64,5%. The key to addressing this is deeper data (through tools like DDD) along with targeted interventions and early warning systems.

THE POWER OF DATA: THINK BIG, THINK BENEFITS! |
Having good data at the right time is useful. But how useful? Consider this:
Netflix uses data analytics to check people’s viewing habits and then recommend shows that match their preferences. Since doing this, viewer activity has grown 75% and customer retention is up to 93%!
Uber processes over 100 petabytes of data every day to help predict rider |
demand during high traffic. Millions of queries are handled by their data warehouse team every day, and 95% of those get a response in under 15 seconds – thanks to data analytics.
“How much is a petabyte?” we hear you ask. If you had a petabyte's worth of 1Gbyte USB flash drives, lined up end to end, they’d stretch over 92 soccer fields. It's also how much storage space you would need if you took 4 000 digital photos every day, for the rest of your life. |

IT TAKES A VILLAGE: Changing lives in Tabankulu, EC |
For Principal Ntlahleni Magwana, DDD has been a game changer. In the past five years, attendance at Ludeke Junior Secondary School has improved from 89% in 2017 to 95% in Term 4 2024 – and with a 100% pass rate for the Grade 7 class!
The secret, he says, lies in building a data mindset and shared accountability throughout the community: Educators track trends through DDD; learners share their goals in a termly “commitment |
ceremony”; and parents commit to playing an active role in their child's learning. When faced with societal issues such as alcohol abuse, violence or poverty, Principal Magwana calls upon community leaders, traditional leaders and ward councillors for support.
And there you have it: When data is transformed into action and everyone is involved, even schools facing the toughest challenges can score top marks! |
