Choice, Voice and Autonomy: Women’s political leadership for health in a fragile world

13 July ¦ Online 

This official side-event to the UN High-Level Political Forum takes place at a time when ongoing crises are profoundly affecting the progress made toward women’s empowerment and the health of vulnerable communities. The event will bring women leaders to reflect on the actions they and their peers are taking to advance gender equity and ensure the rights, health and wellbeing of every woman, child and adolescent. Register now!

The event is hosted by Estonia and co-organized by PMNCH, International Health Partnership for UHC2030, Women in Global Health and Global Health 50/50.

 

Repeal of Roe v. Wade has fired the starting gun in an urgent race to protect sexual and reproductive rights

Statement from Rt. Hon. Helen Clark, PMNCH Board Chair

The decision of the US Supreme Court to repeal its 1973 ruling on abortion, Roe vs Wade, means 26 states are certain or likely to ban abortion, instantly stripping women and girls of their right to choose and make an informed decision about their own bodies. The effects of the repeal will extend way beyond US borders, experts predict a fall in US bilateral and multilateral funding, thus reducing US ability to support the millions of people worldwide who need access to family planning and abortion services.

G7 commits to achieving comprehensive sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR)

G7 countries have called for a gender-equal global recovery following the pandemic and reaffirmed their continuous efforts to improve women's, children's and adolescents' health. In a Communiqué issued at the G7 Leader's Summit on 28 June, G7 Member States reiterated their commitment to achieving comprehensive SRHR for all individuals and stressed the importance of access to emergency sexual and reproductive health services in humanitarian crises. Continue reading

Fondation Botnar #MyCityMyVoice campaign

Fondation Botnar has launched the #MyCityMyVoice campaign calling on young people (aged 10-30)  to share an idea that expresses their vision for a city where wellbeing is achieved.  Follow this link to learn more about the campaign and how to enter the competition and be eligible to win a prize. The deadline for entries is 8th July.

 

Multi-stakeholder survey for universal health coverage 

UHC2030 invites civil society and other stakeholders to share real, lived experiences via this multi-stakeholder survey. This information will enhance UHC2030’s efforts in developing the State of UHC Commitment review, which compiles data on how governments deliver on their commitments. The deadline to respond is 31 July 2022. 

 

Improving the quality of care for maternal, newborn and child health 

This implementation guide from WHO, provides practical guidance for policymakers, programme managers, health practitioners and other actors working to establish and implement quality of care programmes for maternal, newborn and child health at the national, district and facility level. Improving nutrition outcomes across sectors: Four multisectoral guidance documents

These four multisectoral guidance documents detail the latest evidence on how to improve nutrition programming and policies and can be used to support staff and/or implementing bodies who are planning or already engaging in nutrition-relevant interventions through a range of sectors. Work was commissioned by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office and developed under PMNCH member DAI’s Technical Assistance to Strengthen Capabilities (TASC).  Available here

 

Celebrating What to Expect Project 8th annual #BumpDay

This month, I am happy to spotlight the What to Expect Project (WTEP), a PMNCH member of the NGO constituency. WTEP is dedicated to informing, supporting, and empowering moms in need around the world, so they can expect healthier pregnancies, safer deliveries, healthier babies, and healthier futures.

WTEP is holding its 8th annual #BumpDay initiative on 20 July. #BumpDay is a social media advocacy campaign that celebrates healthy pregnancies while raising urgent awareness about maternal deaths, the majority of which are preventable, and the need for better, more accessible maternal health care throughout the world.  Continue reading
