Issue #15: Have you walked past our mangroves and noticed an unusual smell? In this week's edition, we're filling you in on why this natural odour occurs, inviting guitarists to participate in Those Who Rock and bringing you details on how you can upscale your business.

Mangroves

Have you noticed the natural odour of our mangroves?

Our city’s lush, green mangrove wetlands create beautiful scenery for a stroll through nature, but it’s that time of the year when you might encounter a strong odour.

From May to November the mangroves drop their seeds, which can result in an odour often likened to a ‘rotten egg smell’, as the organic material breaks down.

This is a natural process and the sign of a healthy mangrove forest, important to our aquatic ecosystem. Several factors influence the intensity of the hydrogen sulfide gas, including the:

  • time of year
  • proximity to mangroves
  • wind speed
  • seasonal factors, such as rainfall and tides
  • yield of mangrove seeds (more seeds results in more organic matter breaking down)
  • air temperature (cooler temperatures disperse less gas).

Learn more about our mangroves by visiting our website.
