Cr Karen Pensabene, Mayor of Strathfield

Dear Residents

Last week, I was delighted to attend the 2023 Strathfield Rotary Vocational Excellence Awards at Strathfield Golf Club. It was a wonderful occasion to recognise the hard work made by outstanding members of our community across different vocations. I’d like to congratulate this year’s nominees and award winners, including Council’s Civic and Protocol Officer, Fina Nainoca, for taking home the Ray Sherry Shield. Well done!

Strathfield Australians of Indian Sub-continental Heritage (SAISH) will be hosting their highly anticipated Sunday morning Yoga Program at Strathfield Library. Classes kick off on 18 June 2023 and run for 26 weeks. Visit our website to secure your spot – these classes book out fast!

There’s less than one week to submit your feedback on the draft Operational Plan and Budget 2023-2024, which comes off exhibition on 31 May. I encourage our local community to have a read through the draft documents and submit their feedback. Each submission will be considered and reported to the Council meeting on 27 June 2023.

As always, please contact me with any of your council requests or news on cr.kpensabene@strathfield.nsw.gov.au

The Homebush Galop

The Homebush Galop, a spirited, lively polka, was composed by Stephen Hale Marsh in 1856 and dedicated to the pianist, Mrs John Rose Holden – formerly Miss Susan Broadhurst. John Rose Holden was a soldier, settler, magistrate, politician and keen sportsman. A friend of William Charles Wentworth, he was instrumental in establishing the Homebush Racecourse and the Australian Jockey Club during the 1840s. The Holdens returned to England during the late 1850s, where John died in 1860 and Susan in 1887. Marsh later settled in San Francisco where his manuscripts were lost in the fire and earthquake of 1906.
