THROWBACK THURSDAY The Homebush Galop The Homebush Galop, a spirited, lively polka, was composed by Stephen Hale Marsh in 1856 and dedicated to the pianist, Mrs John Rose Holden – formerly Miss Susan Broadhurst. John Rose Holden was a soldier, settler, magistrate, politician and keen sportsman. A friend of William Charles Wentworth, he was instrumental in establishing the Homebush Racecourse and the Australian Jockey Club during the 1840s. The Holdens returned to England during the late 1850s, where John died in 1860 and Susan in 1887. Marsh later settled in San Francisco where his manuscripts were lost in the fire and earthquake of 1906.
