Welcome to the SHINE May 2026 Newsletter
SHINE Annual National Network Event 2026
SHINE Annual National Event Theme: Understanding Barriers to School Attendance in the Scottish Context On 14th May, we welcomed over 100 delegates to the 2026 SHINE National Networking Event, at the University of Glasgow School of Health and Wellbeing, bringing educationalists and health researchers together to focus on the topic of emotionally-based school non-attendance. As the main dissemination event for the ABSAIL project, we were delighted with the levels of engagement, feedback and the enthusiasm for co-production and collaboration. Local Authority mental health and wellbeing data collection 2026/27 The improvement planning phase is well under way in educational settings, thinking ahead to the 2026/27 academic session. The SHINE mental health and wellbeing online pupil survey has been used by Local Authorities to track and monitor wellbeing strengths and priorities at school, primary cluster and Local Authority-wide levels since 2020. We are currently booking in Local Authorities for the 2026/27 session. If you would like to find out more or register interest, please contact the SHINE Network Manager at Dawn.Haughton@glasgow.ac.uk
New report: young people's online experiences & impact on their mental health
The Mental Health Improvement Team at NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde and Barnardo’s Scotland have published a new report, “Growing Up Online”, which you can read in full here . This work brought together the voices and experiences of around 300 children and young people (aged 12–26) from across Greater Glasgow and Clyde to better understand how they experience being online and the impact this has on their mental health and wellbeing. This work provides valuable, locally grounded insight at a time of growing national and international focus on children and young people’s online lives. HBSC study: final month of data collection

Neurodiversity in Scottish Schools (NISS) Exploring views on psychologically informed reflective practice in schools Have your say in a new survey! We are inviting secondary school teachers to take part in a short University of Glasgow survey exploring views on psychologically informed reflective practice in schools, as part of the Neurodiversity in Scottish Schools (NISS) research programme. The survey asks about your experiences and perspectives, and should take around 10–15 minutes to complete. Your input will help shape future approaches to supporting staff and improving outcomes for neurodivergent young people. We would also be grateful if you could share this among colleagues or teams. Participation is voluntary and anonymous. Full information about the study, including ethics approval and consent, is provided at the start of the survey. As a thank you, you will have the option to enter a prize draw for one of four £50 vouchers. This is done via a separate link at the end of the survey, so your responses remain anonymous.
