The Family Medicine residency program celebrates 10 years of CBME

In 2009, the Department of Family Medicine developed and piloted a teaching and assessment framework founded in the concept of assessment for learning and evidence-guided workplace-based assessment called the Competency-Based Achievement System (CBAS). In 2010, CBAS was fully implemented for all of our residents. CBAS follows the CBME assessment guidelines of the College of Family Physicians of Canada, and has been cited as a highlight of our residency program in two accreditation cycles. Evaluation of CBAS has shown that family medicine residents are observed and assessed by multiple observers across multiple settings, and that assessment information about our residents has significantly increased since implementation of CBME.

We are happy to share the success of CBME in family medicine residency training, even as we continuously work to ensure that our training and assessment is the best that it can be for our residents.

You can learn more about CBAS here, and here, and you can read about some of our outcomes here.

If you have any questions about how assessment works in family medicine residency training, you can contact Dr. Shelley Ross.
