There were 26 reports of potential or confirmed non-compliant Agricultural Compound and Veterinary Medicine (ACVM) products or activities received in August 2024: Inhibitor update The ACVM team continues to meet with stakeholders to discuss regulatory requirements for environmental inhibitor products. To date, ACVM has approved 51 research trial applications for companies to conduct trial work on their products. Additionally, six trade-name inhibitor products have been accepted into the ACVM system. Four of these are urease inhibitors that are currently under assessment; the other two are methane inhibitor products. The amendment to the ACVM Act is still in progress and at the select committee stage. It is unknown when this amendment will pass but might be later this year. AMR team update The 2023 Antibiotic Agricultural Compounds Sales Analysis is now available on the MPI website with an accompanying media release. Highlights of this year’s report include a decline in sales of antibiotics used in plants and animals for a sixth year in a row and sales of antibiotics considered critical for human health almost halving in the past year. The reduction is a direct result of the concerted effort by veterinarians, famers, industry, and New Zealand Food Safety to ensure these life-saving medicines are used appropriately. Since a peak in 2017 of 71,361kg, total antibiotic sales have dropped to 39,549kg in 2023. That is an impressive 45% decrease. Proposed reassessment of VTAs containing brodifacoum A new dedicated webpage for the proposed reassessment of VTAs containing brodifacoum went live last month on the MPI website. This page contains information on the process to date, previous consultation documents, and other relevant information. The webpage will also include updates on the proposed reassessment as these become available. ACVM applications approved in September 2024 Agricultural chemicals application update As of 27 September, there were:

The team continues to manage the balance between the screening of incoming new applications, continued work on in-progress appraisals, and picking up new applications. The team is currently recruiting for three vacant roles within the Ag-Chem & VTAs Assessments team due to staff either leaving MPI or going on maternity leave. More than half of the applications in the queue (67%) are for new products (14 A-type, 10 B-type). An additional nine applications (25%) in the queue are new use/use-change (C4-C8) applications. Collectively, these applications (which make up 92%) take much longer to assess and therefore constitute a significant amount of work for the team. The number of applications under assessment is decreasing. This is partially due to the processing of some C10 applications for the glyphosate reassessment. Overall, the number of applications under assessment continues to remain higher than usual, which reflects the team's effort to manage incoming applications, the queue and outstanding C10 applications. Veterinary medicine application update As of 27 September, there were:

The Vet Meds team has also officially accepted two inhibitor applications into the system. The majority of the queue continues to be chemistry and manufacturing variations, which make up 73% of the current queue. Since 1 July 2024, there have been an average of 10 new applications every week. Thank you to those applicants who are following the guidance and including the required documentation and information when submitting an application.
