Technology Enhanced Learning News

March 2025

A message from Dr Neil Ralph, Deputy Director of Technology Enhanced Learning

Welcome to TEL news March 2025

The recent announcements from the Secretary of State, Amanda Pritchard, NHS Chief Executive; and Jim Mackey, Incoming Transformation CEO about the future of NHS England are understandably upsetting and unsettling for us all, considering many are still adjusting to their new teams and roles following our move from HEE.

I don't have any new information to share about our future role and position, but I want to extend a heartfelt 'Thank you' to you all for your continued engagement with the TEL run activities and support to each other. We have some fantastic new programmes to share with the workforce and I hope we can continue this work for the months to come.

Workstream Updates

Simulation and Immersive Technologies

Virtual Reality 360 Degree content on the Learning Hub

Following a successful server update, the Learning Hub now contains a series of virtual reality 360-degree video resources that are now available to our learners.

You can find the national learning content on our simulation and immersive technologies catalogue, which contains resources from our programmes including: Enhanced Health in Care Homes, Nursing in Adult Prison Healthcare, and Pharmacy A Day in the Life.

We now encourage you to take advantage of the platform and share your own immersive content on the Learning Hub.

Facilitator Guide: Enhanced Health in Care Homes Programme

A new set of resources have launched for the Enhanced Health in Care Homes programme, and are designed for care home professionals, carers, and healthcare professionals to develop their knowledge of key clinical conditions that someone in their care might experience. Each resource provides a VR 360 experience of a care home environment and the situations and conversations that may take place.

The facilitator guide supports facilitator-led, face-to-face learning opportunities that encourage group participation and promote discussion. It includes:

  • Facilitator presentation - prepopulated with videos, key points and reflections. It is intended to be used as a template and can be customised to suit the desired facilitation structure.

  • Facilitator Guide - provides advice and guidance on preparation, supporting resources and signposting, advice and guidance for evaluation and a suggested plan for the delivery of the session.

  • Downloadable Individual scenarios - including Personalised Care, Eating and Drinking, Wound Care, Mouth Care, Mobility and Falls, Dementia and Communication, End of Life and Pain. All allow for bespoke delivery tailored to your learning objective.

You can now access these resources on the Learning Hub.

Platform Updates

Platforms

Our TEL platforms are free to use and are designed to meet differing training needs.

A wide range of learning resources can be found on the Learning Hub, which allows colleagues with an NHS, GOV.UK or ac.uk email address to contribute content. The Learning Hub is developed iteratively to ensure ease of use and functionality meets our learners’ requirements.

The latest resources on the Learning Hub include a new catalogue from the Mental Health Improvement Support team (MHIST) offering courses relating to various service areas affecting mental health and how these can be improved throughout the NHS.

Migration to Learning Hub

All new elearning content is available on the Learning Hub, joining 84 existing elearning for Healthcare (elfh) programmes. The movement of this content supports the TEL vision of offering a single national learning platform in the future.

The latest elfh content available on the Learning Hub includes a new catalogue hosting resources on Elective care.

Digital skills and basic digital literacy training can be found on the Digital Learning Solutions (DLS) platform. Digital competency frameworks and assessment tools are also located on DLS.

If you would like to speak to someone about the TEL platforms, please email the TEL Platforms Implementation Managers.

Putting care first: Transforming statutory and mandatory training

We’re transforming how the NHS approaches statutory and mandatory training to create a better experience for everyone. Our ambition is to make training simpler, smarter and more streamlined across the entire NHS. The following five statutory and mandatory sessions have been reviewed and updated with newly appointed NHSE National Subject Matter Experts (SMEs).

  • Data security awareness
  • Equality, diversity and human rights
  • Fire safety
  • Safeguarding adults level 1
  • Safeguarding adults level 2

Staff will not be required to redo these sessions, but they will be available for people when they renew their training. You can find out more on our website.

Foundation Programme Update - Mental Health Assessment

Mental health assessment is a vital part of all doctors’ professional practice. How good are you at managing these patients?

Sessions are available in the elearning for healthcare Foundation Programme (2021 curriculum) to help you. HORUS and TURAS have deep links to elearning for healthcare sessions from the Foundation Curriculum and therefore accessible to all trainees, making it quicker and easy to access the appropriate session linked to the curriculum.

Updates made to the COVID-19 vaccination elearning programme

Since the COVID-19 vaccination programme went live, the content of the different sessions which make up this programme has been updated and amended as more information about the vaccines and the vaccine programme has become available.

For those who have already completed this elearning programme, full updates are detailed on the elearning for healthcare webpage.
