Celebrating a Year of Accomplishments
The 2023–24 academic year has been an excellent year for our students. While we continue celebrating the tenth anniversary of the Chancellor’s Associates Scholars Program (CASP), I am heartened to see this milestone join a series of recent achievements that speak to the caliber of UC San Diego and our students.
Testifying to the substantial appeal of a UC San Diego education, the size of our student body has grown tremendously and now includes more than 43,000 students. New state-of-the-art facilities are now open for housing and significant enhancements to student life — such as the re-envisioned Craft Center and Design and Innovation Building. Projects underway, like the Strauss Family Meta Gallery in Triton Center, are essential to cementing UC San Diego as a leading destination.
Our focus on students is borne out in the campus’ rising reputation. In September, UC San Diego advanced two spots to tie for sixth place among public universities in the 2024 U.S. News & World Report’s Best Colleges ranking. Additionally, Washington Monthly continues to recognize UC San Diego as a leading public university for contributions to social mobility, research and public service. Our rankings underscore our dedication to providing students with affordable access to a world-class education, along with the tools and support they need for success.
I am immensely proud of the accomplishments of our Chancellor’s Associates scholars, who are halfway through the spring quarter, especially the seniors who are approaching graduation. As we prepare to complete an outstanding year, I want to thank you for supporting the success of CASP and UC San Diego as a whole. Through annual gifts and scholarship endowments, you are opening doors for our scholars to become global changemakers. Thank you for your ongoing support and partnership.
With kind regards,
Pradeep K. Khosla
Chancellor
Joan and Irwin Jacobs Chancellor’s Endowed Chair
As I reflect on the growth of CASP, I am inspired by the power of collective philanthropy.
The new generation of Triton alumni, which includes CASP and Graduates of the Last Decade (GOLD) alumni, are now joining our Chancellor’s Associates community. Their generosity in giving back to CASP is a testament to the strength of the program’s impact. The support of new GOLD alumni donors, paired with ongoing support from our dedicated group of Chancellor’s Associates, points to a brighter future for all.
I would like to highlight Triton Giving Day (formerly known as u.care) as an upcoming opportunity to further expand our collective philanthropic efforts. This 24-hour fundraising initiative is taking place on Wednesday, May 15. Should you be so inclined, this is an excellent opportunity to introduce friends and colleagues to the Chancellor’s Associates and our mission.
Chancellor’s Associates has a nearly 60-year legacy of funding the most pressing needs on campus, and since the inception of our life-changing scholarship program a decade ago, your support has provided more than 2,500 scholars the opportunity to attend our remarkable university.
Sincerely,
David E. Buccigrossi ’79, MD ’84
Chair, Chancellor’s Associates
Tanvir R. Hussain ’21, MS ’22
“Verifiably, the biggest single contributor to my success has been CASP,” said Tanvir R. Hussain '21, MS '22, who studied electrical and computer engineering.
As a tutor in an introductory engineering course, Hussain helped create a welcoming, collaborative environment. Spending time at the EnVision Arts and Engineering Maker Studio inspired Tanvir to envision a brighter future alongside peers and mentors. He eventually partnered with Professor Karcher Morris to bring the introductory course to a high school in Chula Vista.
With support from CASP, Tanvir built a strong foundation at UC San Diego. After completing several engineering internships at NIWC Pacific, he secured a full-time position as an engineer shortly after graduating with his master’s degree. Tanvir was recently promoted to the position of STEM Ambassador at NIWC Pacific’s unmanned maritime vehicle lab, a role that allows him to share his passion for STEM with the next generation of engineers.
Without the opportunities CASP provided, Tanvir could not imagine being where he is today. He hopes you’ll join him in supporting Chancellor’s Associates scholars on Triton Giving Day to make higher education more accessible for students like him.

Brian M. Powers and Paula H. Powers Chancellor’s Associates Scholar
Prosperity Land ’24 has spent the past year overseeing a scholarship program for first-generation refugee students. An engaged community member, she also completed training to become a crisis counselor and conducted a community research survey to assess the needs of refugees in San Diego.
CASP has enriched Prosperity’s college journey by providing opportunities and making the challenging periods of college much more manageable. The scholarship has opened doors for Prosperity to explore new experiences, join clubs and invest in personal growth.
Following the completion of her undergraduate studies in sociology and global health, Prosperity’s goal is to apply for the master's program in computational social science at UC San Diego. To augment her experiences amplifying the voices and sharing the stories of refugees, she aspires to cultivate a comprehensive skill set that would allow her to communicate not only the emotional and personal dimensions of her people’s history, but also to present statistical data that illuminate decades of hidden suffering, resilience and strength.
