Introduction Welcome to TRIUMPH’s September newsletter. We have packed this newsletter full of the latest news and useful resources relevant to TRIUMPH’s work. Register now for TRIUMPH Fest! 7th October 2022, Edinburgh TRIUMPH Fest aims to celebrate young people’s contribution to mental health research and activism and provide an opportunity for young people, researchers, policymakers and practitioners working with young people to come together and share learning and opportunities to improve young people’s mental health.
The Festival programme includes: -Presentations from young people involved in mental health research and activism - Festival stalls led by young people, researchers and those working with young people highlighting exciting ongoing projects and new research opportunities - Lively discussion around how to amplify youth voices and mental health messages. TRIUMPH Symposium: Coproducing research to improve young people’s mental health On Monday 5th September we hosted an online symposium to celebrate the achievements of the network’s plus-funded projects, and hear about their experiences of coproducing this work alongside young people. If you missed the symposium recordings of the presentations will be available on the TRIUMPH website soon, as well as links to other outputs from each of the plus-funded projects.
Youth Advisory Group residential In August we hosted out third and final residential weekend with the TRIUMPH Youth Advisory Group in Birmingham. Our Youth Advisors worked hard over three days, analysing data from their peer-led research project and planning the next steps for the research, contributing to plans for TRIUMPH Fest, hearing back from some of the research projects they have been involved with via the network, and discussing the legacy of the group. If you want to find out more, one of our Youth Advisors Praveena has written a fantastic blog about the weekend.
TRIUMPH presenting at the International Association for Youth Mental Health (IAYMH) Conference 2022 Members of the TRIUMPH team, including both research staff and youth advisory group members, will be travelling to Copenhagen at the end of September to present at the IAYMH Conference 2022. Their presentation will focus on the Youth Advisory Group’s peer-led research project looking at the importance of supportive relationships for mental health and how adults can support young people to feel better understood. If you are also attending the conference, please do come and say hello!
THRIVE Magazine, Mental Health and Wellbeing Special Researchers at Cardiff University, led by Rhiannon Evans, have partnered with the Fostering Network to create a special edition of the Fostering Network’s THIRVE Magazine focussed on mental health and wellbeing. This collaboration was a result of one of the TRIUMPH plus-funded projects that looked at experiences of online mental health and wellbeing support during the COVID-19 pandemic among care-experienced young people, and highlights the projects findings within the magazine. MRC: Develop and evaluate innovative methods to study adolescent health Apply for funding up to £150,000 to develop and evaluate innovative tools and methods for health and wellbeing research in older children and adolescents between eight and 18 years old. Projects can have general health relevance or can be tailored to specific health research areas. Deadline: 27 October 2022
NIHR: Interventions to promote mental health and wellbeing among young women The Public Health Research Programme wishes to commission research on the effectiveness of interventions to promote good mental health and wellbeing, and prevent or reduce mental ill-health, amongst young women. This programme is predominantly interested in the evaluation of interventions operating at a population level rather than at an individual level, which should address health inequalities and the wider determinants of health. Deadline: 29 November 2022
LGBTQ+ Youth Mental Health Gathering 13th October 2022, online event This online event will bring together practitioners, researchers and communities interested in LGBTQ+ youth mental health and wellbeing. Attendees are invited to come along to showcase your research and best practice, network and connect with others interested in this topic, ask questions, and seek and provide support and information across sectors and disciplines.
The event coordinating team are currently open to suggestions for sessions from anyone working with or interested in LGBTQ+ young people’s mental health and wellbeing, and wider work to better understand and improve the lives of LGBTQ+ young people.
The Big Emerging Minds Summit 17th October 2022, St Catherine’s College, Oxford Join the Emerging Minds team to hear about the findings, challenges, and successes from the research that they have supported through their Special Interest Research Groups, Cross-Sector Placements and Research Challenge grants. The event will also include discussion around the priorities and next steps for mental health research that will lead to action on children & young people’s mental health.
SMaRteN End of Project Showcase 4th November 2022, Science Gallery, London This event will bring together students and stakeholders from across the sector to engage in a conversation about Student Mental Health and where we need to go next, as well as sharing learnings from the amazing range of research projects funded by SMaRTeN. From Monday 31st October -Thursday 3rd November, there will be a range of online activities including
webinars, panel sessions and themed discussion groups as part of the lead in to a final face to face conference.
Mental Images Photo Study Researchers from the University of Sussex are looking for young people aged 14-17 and based in the UK with lived experience of depression for a creative photo study exploring mental images of the self. By mental images, we mean the pictures you see in your head such as memories of the past flashing to mind or visualisations of the future. The study involves taking photos that represent the mental images you experience of yourself, and taking part in an online interview about the photos, your experiences of mental images and depression.
