May Tip: Contestants Want Advice

This year, we sent nine mailings to our house list to promote our Tom Howard/John H. Reid Fiction & Essay Contest. The leader in terms of open rate was the fifth mailing, sent on April 11. It hit 30.02%—pretty good for us. The subject was "Our Fiction & Essay Contest: Advice from the Editor". In the A/B test we did as part of the mailing, it trounced the other subject, "Deadline May 1: Win $3,500 for a Story or Essay", by 34% in opens and 56% in clicks. We'll be sure to share advice from our editor and judges for all our contests.
