QLDC Winter Road Report - 21 September 2023

Kia ora Hello Queenstown Lakes District!

Well the weather tantrum didn't quite kick off yesterday but it looks like it may have been saving it up for today. We've got another round of warnings including heavy rain and strong winds forecast, along with snow fall predicted.

Currently we've got reports of it being very wet, windy and warm across the whole region. There has been severe wind in localised areas, so take care as there may be debris on some tree lined roads.

Snow looks to be coming on the Crown Range this evening and grit trucks and ploughs are scheduled to be patrolling from mid afternoon. Please drive with a healthy dose of caution and keep an eye out for road report updates on our Facebook page  if you have to travel over the Crown Range this evening.

Here's a summary of conditions to be aware of today:

  • Crown Range Road & Cardrona Valley:  Wet roads and positive temperatures.
  • Wānaka area: Mix of damp and dry roads with positive temperatures.
  • Queenstown and Whakatipu Basin: Wet roads with positive temperatures.
  • Glenorchy: Wet roads and positive temperatures.
  • Out of district: Windy and warm with temperatures already at 12 degrees and rising.

Please do get in touch if you come across any issues on the roads by dialling 03 441 0499.

I'll sign off the report with my wintery themed joke of the day:

What do you call a glove combined with a snake?
Smitten.

Stay cosy,
Tessa

DISCLAIMER:  Road conditions during winter can change at any time. Our advice is to always carry chains, slow down and drive to the conditions. We will always do our best to give you the most up-to-date conditions for key commuter roads, but we can't drive every road in the district before 7.00am.  Remember, if it's snowing, this slows us down too and these reports should never replace common sense.
