Greetings, Dear friend:

The summer solstice is soon approaching, bringing attention to the hot, sharp, spreading and sour qualities of pitta. Now is the time to stay cool, calm and collected by choosing moon salutations for morning stretching, shitali (cooling) pranayama for breathing exercises, favouring bitter, sweet and astringent tastes for meals, planning the main meal for midday and taking only lighter items later in the day.

You can help avoid pitta symptoms and disturbances by doing sun exposure only during the early morning and evening hours, to help avoid intense sun exposure during the hot part of the day.

Common symptoms seen in a clinical setting at this time of year are rashes, fevers, inflammations, boils, eruptions and infections, which can spread quickly in hot weather conditions. Diarrhea and vomiting are more common in summertime.

Silver is a cooling substance, pacifying to pitta dosha and quick acting. Colloidal silver gel can be applied topically and colloidal silver drops can be taken internally as directed. Consult your Ayurvedist for specific personal and family concerns.

Take advantage of this summer’s opportunities rich for learning and healing with Ayurveda.

HYDRATION: Sip Your Way to a Centred Summer

Have you tasted these summer cooling beverages? They all have a cooling thermal effect and will delight your palate while helping maintain inner peace. Try these and send me your comments, preferences, and ideas, OK?

 ● 1 cup pure water with 1 tsp. pure maple syrup and 1 tsp. pure lime juice. This luscious electrolyte beverage is effective for hydration and its cooling effect is quick acting, especially if sipped. Good for all ages. Serves one. Serve at room temperature.

 ●  3 cups pure water simmered with ½ inch fresh ginger root slices for 5 mins. Remove from heat, add 1 tsp. each green cardamom pods, cumin, coriander, and fennel seeds. Cover, steep for 15 mins. Strain. Serves 3. Refreshes and invigorates the GI tract

 ● 1 litre or a quart of pure water, add 1T organic rose petals, 1 tsp. dried lavender seeds and 1T lime peels. Steep overnight. Strain. Serve with fresh mint leaves at room temperature. Avoid ice. An amazing, cooling pick-me-up, especially on a hot play day!

 ● 1 litre or a quart of pure water, add 1 tsp. pure maple syrup and ¼ tsp. pure rock salt. This amazing glucose-saline beverage will come in so handy on your summer picnic or outing, in case of dehydration. Bring your flask along. It’ll be needed!

Drink to your thirst and taste preference. Avoid dairy items mixed into herbal teas.

More Tips for Pitta Management

Summer is an easy-living time for enjoying colourful experiences, adventuresome plans, and nature-based discoveries. Our human learning curve is extroverted into the brilliance of the natural world, nourishing all our senses, especially through visual digestion and the observational process.

Check your sunscreen for any chemical ingredients, many of which are known carcinogens. Use instead medicated neem oil externally, if sun exposure is required. Re-apply frequently and after swimming. Dr. Lad says this type of Neem Oil has a 35 SPF rating. Keep your little ones, grandparents, and pets away from undue sun exposure. Death by sunstroke still happens every year.

Early to bed and early to rise is still the best practice to take full advantage of life’s wondrous daily potentials. Meditation is always the first and last medicine in all seasons.

Pitta can be tempted into exaggeration, boastfulness and daredevil behaviour, especially in summertime. Try to reason with yourself and take the middle path where new discoveries and safety can happily co-exist. Think it through for no regrets, especially at this heated time of year, OK?

Make sound decisions when in a balanced state; if pitta imbalance is transiting, postpone big life decisions until cool-headedness prevails again. ‘Could have’ and ‘should have’ come from imbalanced, excessive pitta qualities transiting the mental channel systems. Balanced Pitta is evidenced by the contentment of being in the present moment.

INVITATION FOR YOU TO
TOUR MY GARDEN THROUGH THE SEASONS.

Check out this amazing peek into our local seasonal changes, the ever-changing elements of nature and our thoughts, feelings, and emotions about LIFE.

Have you noticed that if anguish is transiting and you focus on the greens of living plants or the emptiness of the sky or the horizon’s lines, indeed any point of nature, the prior prison palpably releases and our way ahead becomes clear?

Catching a glimpse of the smallest of beauties from Nature’s designs can somehow transform the heart. Deep breathing restores by itself and rest can settle back into the channels. Cycles re-set and refresh themselves.

As always, I love hearing back from you regarding your Ayurveda journey. Yours on this path of seeking on-going balance.
