Collagen is the most abundant protein in your body. It’s the main component of connective tissues that make up several body parts, including tendons, ligaments, skin, and muscles. Collagen has many important functions, including providing your skin with structure and strengthening your bones. There are 28 types of collagen, but here are the four most common: Type I: the most common type, found in all connective tissue Type ll: found in joints and intervertebral discs (the cushions that serve as your spine’s shock absorbers) Type lll: the main component of reticular fibers, which are found in your skin and blood vessels Type lV: a component of your kidneys, inner ear, and eye lens In recent years, collagen supplements have become popular. Most are hydrolyzed, which means the collagen has been broken down to make it easier to absorb. These supplements come primarily in powder form but are also available in capsules. The types of collagen found in supplements vary — some contain one or two types, while others contain up to five. Several foods may naturally increase your collagen intake, including pork skin and bone broth. Foods that contain collagen Foods that contain gelatin, such as bone broth, provide collagen. Gelatin is a protein substance derived from collagen after it’s cooked. Collagen is found in the connective tissues of animals. Thus, foods such as chicken skin, pork skin, beef, and fish are sources of collagen. Vitamin C is crucial for collagen synthesis, so you should also be sure to eat foods rich in this vitamin, such as citrus fruits, broccoli, and bell peppers. More research is needed to determine whether eating collagen-rich foods helps increase collagen levels in your body, as they may not have the same benefits as supplements. Digestive enzymes break down the collagen in food into individual amino acids and peptides. However, the collagen in supplements has already been broken down, or hydrolysed, which is why it’s thought to be absorbed more efficiently than collagen from foods. Health benefits of collagen supplements Collagen supplementation provides a variety of health benefits and we have listed 6 benefits from the article here. To read more in-depth about each benefit you can link to the full article here 1. May improve skin health 2. May relieve joint pain 3. May prevent bone loss 4. May boost muscle mass 5. May promote heart health 6. Other health benefits include supporting gut health, brain health, weight loss and benefiting hair and nails How long does it take to see results? Collagen turnover is a slow process. As such, no matter your goal for using collagen, it will take at least 8 weeks to experience noticeable results. Most studies use a minimum of 8 weeks to assess collagen’s effects on skin health and joint pain relief, but other studies use longer periods, such as 12 months, for bone health. Thus, you should be patient and not expect results for a while. The bottom line: Collagen supplements are associated with several health benefits and very few known risks. Supplements may increase muscle mass, prevent bone loss, relieve joint pain, and improve skin health by reducing wrinkles and dryness. While other benefits may exist, most claims about weight loss, gut health, and brain health aren’t backed by research. Although several foods contain collagen, it’s unknown whether these foods offer the same benefits as supplements. Collagen supplements are generally safe, easy to use, and worth trying based on your health goals. The above was taken from the article Top 6 Benefits of Taking Collagen Supplements. To make about 3 - 2/3 cups you will need 150g (2/3 cup) Beeswax 600g (3 cups) Olive Oil * - You can use up to 900g to make a creamier polish 30 drops Anti-oxidant such as Grapefruit Seed Extract or Vitamin E (optional) 10 drops Essential oil e.g. Lavender Essential Oil or a woodsy essential oil blend (optional) * Olive oil on its own can do this really well, albeit temporarily since it has a tendency to erode. Beeswax is much more durable and can give your furniture a long-lasting brilliant sheen and texture after regular application. Another ingredient that I encourage you to use is a clear Grapefruit seed extract or Vitamin E oil though from a functional perspective it’s completely optional. Though beeswax lasts years without going rancid, olive oil can eventually go rancid. An anti-oxidant will help stop that from happening and ensure that your polish continues to smell like rich honey-scented beeswax. Instructions on making natural beeswax furniture polish 1. Place both the beeswax and the olive oil into a double boiler such as demonstrated in the image below. You can make a double boiler by floating a saucepan inside another pan filled with hot water. You want your oils heated indirectly and evenly in this way because it’s safer for you and helps maintain the integrity of the ingredients 2. Heat the double boiler/pans on medium heat until the beeswax is melted. Stirring it will help speed things up but don’t be tempted to turn your heat up too high. There’s a chance that boiling water will splash into your oils 3. Add the optional anti-oxidant and essential oil and stir well. Pour the hot mixture into clean and dry wide-mouth containers. Allow to cool for at least two hours into a semi-hard balm consistency 4. You can use the polish immediately and no doubt you’ll do what I did…run around the house looking for wooden objects to beautify! To use the polish, just scoop some of it out with your fingers or with a rag and work the polish into any and all wooden surfaces. You can wipe excess polish off immediately or leave it on for a couple of hours. That gives more time for the oils to permeate the wood. Buff it to a sheen afterward and you’ll be delighted with how gorgeous the wood looks.
