A selection of news, resources and opportunities for action and advocacy around women’s, children’s and adolescents’ health

January 2023

Economics of Women's Health: World Economic Forum, Davos

Leaders from government, business and civil society will convene in Davos on 16-20 January to address the state of the world and discuss priorities for the year ahead. Investing in women’s health can contribute to economic and social development; why do gendered health and well-being gaps continue to persist and what policies and actions are needed to improve the situation? Join H.E. President Cyril Ramaphosa from South Africa, Rt. Hon. Helen Clark, PMNCH Board Chair and former Prime Minister of New Zealand, among other speakers for a session on 'Economics of Women’s Health' and leadership around women's, children's and adolescents' health.

A child or youth died once every 4.4 seconds in 2021 – UN report

In 2021, an estimated 5 million children died before their fifth birthday and 2.1 million children and youth between 5–24 years old lost their lives, according to the United Nations Inter-agency Group for Child Mortality Estimation. A second report found that 1.9 million babies were stillborn during the same period. Many of these deaths could have been prevented with equitable access and through the provision of higher quality maternal, newborn, adolescent and child healthcare.

Improving policy, financing and delivery of postnatal care services

Postnatal care has long been neglected within the essential package of services across the continuum of reproductive, maternal, newborn and child health. Yet, the highest burden of mortality and morbidity for mothers and infants occurs within the postnatal period and is largely preventable. Read this paper on increasing coverage of postnatal care for vulnerable populations by PMNCH's Etienne Langlois, Teesta Dey and Domenico Iaia, as well as Emma Sacks.

Pollution-free Environments for Future Generations

There has been a reported spike in respiratory diseases among children in many parts of the world. What are the symptoms and red flags? How can we protect our children and grown ups from these infections?

Watch this video from WHO.

To help address children's environmental health as a clinician, community health worker or medical school faculty, WHO published information sheets with corresponding slides for anyone in the world to download, revise into their own languages and fit to their regional situation.

PMNCH Private Sector partners advancing women's, children's and adolescents' health

This month, I’m proud to spotlight six partners from our PMNCH Private Sector Constituency - Abt Associates, DAI, Ferring, Laerdal Global Health, MSD for Mothers and Philips. In a true collaborative effort, these organizations led the development of a framing paper on private sector engagement within PMNCH, which was approved by the PMNCH Board in December 2022 and will be used as a guide for the development of a strategy for enhancing private sector leadership in advancing women’s, children’s and adolescents’ health (WCAH).

Kudos to all our private sector partners.  As we prepare for the Global Forum for Adolescents in October 2023, we look forward to their contributions as well as strategic partnerships to expand reach to women, children and adolescents.
