Thank you and happy holidays from UHC2030!As we approach the end of another busy year, we would like to thank you for your unwavering commitment to universal health coverage (UHC). Through your continued engagement and advocacy, you have helped us sustain momentum towards building equitable and resilient health systems that leave no one behind. Below is a look back at some of our achievements this year. They would not have been possible without you! UHC Day and the 2023 UN High-level meeting on UHC may be behind us, but the work must go on. We cannot afford to rest until the 4.5 billion people still struggling for their right to health can finally access the essential health services they deserve and the 2 billion people facing financial hardship in doing so do no longer have to face impoverishing out-of-pocket health spending. Because health is not merely a privilege reserved for some; it is a basic human right that should be enjoyed by all, including in conflict zones. So let’s continue to raise our voices and hold our leaders accountable for their commitments. Here’s how:
Together, we can create lasting change and build healthier societies where everyone thrives. Happy holidays and see you in 2024! UHC Day: In honor of UHC Day, youth advocates engaged with parliamentarians in a town hall about how we can achieve #HealthForAll by 2030. The George Institute for Global Health and CSEM also co-published a blog to highlight the progress made in 2023 in advancing social participation and the opportunities to get involved in 2024. Members of the Coalition of Partnerships for UHC and Global Health and members of the UHC2030 Related Initiatives shared their perspectives on how they will help keep UHC high on the agenda and contribute to translate commitments into action. And UHC advocates from around the world rallied behind this year’s theme, "Health for All: Time for Action", with dozens of UHC champions and over 100 events. Our own UHC Day 20:30 campaign was viewed 35,000 times and shared 1000 times! State of UHC commitment review: The State of UHC commitment brings a unique multi-stakeholder view to a simple question: Are countries acting on their commitments to UHC? The 2023 review emphasizes that now is the time for countries to take urgent action to close the gaps between policy, implementation and results. The UHC2030 Civil Society Engagement Mechanism (CSEM) and UHC2030 hosted an online session on 6 December to share the key findings and recommendations from the review and to discuss steps that different stakeholders, including civil society, can take to support the translation of the UN HLM commitments into concrete actions at the country level. UHC HLM: The 2023 UN High-level meeting (HLM) on UHC that took place on 21 September 2023 provided countries and stakeholders an opportunity to reinvigorate progress towards delivering health for all. During the meeting, Member States adopted the Political Declaration on UHC. They reaffirmed the importance of primary health care as the most effective and inclusive way to build equitable and resilient health systems for both UHC and health security. They also unanimously recognized that UHC is fundamental to pandemic preparedness, prevention and response, and to achieving all of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including those related to poverty eradication, access to education, gender equality, climate change and building peaceful and inclusive societies. Action Agenda: Published in March of this year, the Action Agenda from the UHC movement is a set of action-oriented policy recommendations to strengthen resilient and equitable health systems, advance UHC and health security, and deliver health for all by 2030. It was developed by an inclusive, multi-stakeholder task force and shaped by a public consultation that gathered 830 responses from over 100 countries. The Action Agenda was referenced in the 2023 Political Declaration on UHC, as well as the G7 and G20 outcome documents.
