Click here WINTER NEWSLETTERWinter Quarter Update from Dean de CastroThroughout winter quarters, I make the effort to employ the spirit of the Ignatian Daily Examen to look back and reflect on the past calendar year. Thinking on the levels of the world around me, there were things that brought consolation, but also things that prompted desolation. For example, I was fortunate enough to go on a week-long silent retreat that allowed me to step out of the day-to-day routine to meaningfully appraise how I can better fulfill my role as Dean. Prior to the event program, enjoy a poster presentation featuring scholarly work by College of Nursing faculty and students. Congratulations to the Ridgway Scholars!Congratulations to Sonia Edwige Tchamba Leckeu, '25, and Liyat Shenkute on being awarded Dr. Eileen Ridgway Endowed Nursing Scholarships. This scholarship inspires leadership development by encouraging student involvement in community outreach, service and civic efforts. Sonia Edwige Tchamba Leckeu, a senior in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program at Seattle University, is focused on supporting families of drug-exposed newborns. Her scholarship project, Building Resilience: A Family-Centered Neonatal Education Program for Drug-Exposed Newborns, will provide education and emotional support to families affected by Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome. Learn more about her dedication to maternal-child health and her future goals in nursing. Liyat Shenkute, a junior in the BSN program at Seattle University, is passionate about both nursing and community advocacy. Through her Ridgway project, “University Camping Equipment Renovated for Houseless Individuals in the Greater Seattle Area,” Liyat is repurposing outdoor gear to provide shelter for houseless individuals in the Seattle area. Women's Health at the Heart of New ProgramThe College of Nursing launches Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner DNP with first cohort to begin in June.In what is the only one of its kind in the Pacific Northwest, Seattle University College of Nursing is launching the Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner (WHNP) Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP). The program, which will have its first cohort beginning in June 2025, offers comprehensive education for nurses who will provide patient-centered primary and specialized care for women and individuals from across the gender spectrum. Scholarship Spotlight: A Lasting TributeFunding supports the education of caring, compassionate health care professionals.Seattle University’s College of Nursing is known for its commitment to educating compassionate and knowledgeable health care professionals. Kim Buike and his late wife, Mary Buike, ’86, experienced this level of care firsthand during Mary’s battle with ovarian cancer. To honor the nurses who cared for her during her three years fighting cancer, Kim and Mary established the Mary Buike Memorial Scholarship. Staff Spotlight: Brigette YatesMeet Brigette Yates, who joined Seattle University as Director of Development for the College of Nursing last fall. She has 20 years of fundraising experience from the University of Washington and the Bainbridge Community Foundation. Her passion for fundraising was ignited after returning from Zambia, Africa, as a Peace Corps volunteer, where she recognized the potential to connect people with meaningful causes through philanthropy.
