Junior School Notices

TERM 1 WEEK 9

From the Head of Junior School

At PLC, extension and support is inclusive. Our Learning Enrichment Centre (LEC) staff work with the classroom teachers to provide personalised services to our Junior School students. We use a range of provisions such as flexible grouping, use of technology, visual strategies, and reciprocal teaching. LEC staff also work closely with teachers and parents to develop individual plans when there are learning concerns, learning difficulties, and disabilities.

It has come to my attention that some parents have been unaware of the extensive support we provide in the Junior School at PLC. Mrs Jenny Rickwood is our Pastoral and Academic Care Co-ordinator (PACC) for Pre-Kindergarten to Year 2 and Mrs Katy Howes is our Pastoral and Academic Care Co-ordinator (PACC) for Years 3 to 6. Our other staff Mrs Felicity Petersen, Ms Jill Willets, Mrs Alison Viney and Ms Michelle Clayton formulate and implement extensive Curriculum, Learning Support and Extension Programmes in the Junior School. Our Learning Enrichment Programmes include both in class and withdrawal lessons, depending on the specific needs of our students. These programmes are research-based and provide targeted intervention and extension. The level of support and extension may look different across the Junior School from classroom to classroom to cater for students’ specific needs. Parents will receive Learning Enrichment Timetables via Seesaw outlining the Learning Support and Extension that occurs in your daughter’s classroom. These timetables commenced in Term 1 Week 4, following rigorous assessment of all students. Using the data to inform our decisions, targeted support and enrichment has been distributed across the Junior School. If parents have any further questions, we encourage you to please speak with your classroom teacher and/or contact the LEC staff.

In-class support for primary children is essential for their academic and personal development. Targeted support enables teachers to provide individual attention to students who require it.

In-class support can:

  • Help students who may be struggling with a particular subject or have specific learning needs.
  • Enhance the learning experience for students by providing additional resources, materials, and learning opportunities. For example, students can benefit from working in small groups or receiving one-on-one instruction from a teacher or an Education Assistant.
  • Promote inclusion by ensuring that all students feel valued and supported. This can lead to improved self-esteem and confidence, and a more positive learning experience for all students.
  • Help build positive relationships between teachers and students. These relationships can help create a supportive and inclusive classroom environment that encourages learning and growth.

In the Junior School at PLC, and in close consultation with Ms Begbie, we are constantly reviewing our teaching and learning programmes and determining where we need to move resources so we can deliver the best learning environment for all our girls. Please don’t hesitate to contact us if you require any further clarification.

JIGSSA Swimming Carnival

Congratulations to all the students and staff involved in Monday's JIGSSA Swimming Carnival at HBF Stadium.

The PLC team spirit was well and truly on display by students and staff alike and many sensational personal bests were swum on the day.

Parents as Learners – River & Beach School

This week, parents from Pre-Kindergarten to Year 2 were invited to attend a session with Daniel Burton from Educated by Nature to discuss the aims and benefits of our new programme: the River and Beach School.

Parents were able to appreciate the importance of children interacting with their peers to collaborate, create, and critically problem-solve in natural settings.

The River and Beach School for our Year 1 and 2 girls continues to be a highlight of their learning. Parent feedback has reinforced that the girls can’t wait for River and Beach School. They are learning so much about the natural environment and why it is so important to care for these fragile areas. Other parents commented on how wonderful it was for the girls to be learning and playing alongside the boys from Scotch College.

We will enjoy one more session down at the river this Friday 31 March before heading to the beach for the winter months. We are all looking forward to the adventures that will unfold during Term 2 and Term 3 at the beach before we return to the river in Term 4.

Rev Nalin's Reflections

The first term has come and gone, as if in an instant and we are now preparing for the Easter break. For those of faith, Palm Sunday is soon to be upon us, as the prelude to what is known as Holy Week in the Christian tradition.

Put simply, it is a time of preparation, yet everyone already knows what the eventual outcome is going to be, namely betrayal, trial, false conviction and brutal execution...
