Technology Enhanced Learning NewsOctober 2024 A message from Dr Neil Ralph, Deputy Director of Technology Enhanced LearningOne of the highlights of our annual calendar is meeting with the brilliant, multi-professional people working with simulation in healthcare education at the Association for Simulation Practice in Healthcare (ASPiH) conference. The theme this year is Transformative Simulation and we will be running workshops and looking to meet with people across health and care who can input into our work to capture and share the benefits of simulation in training. For those of you travelling to Edinburgh for the event, please come to our sessions or find the team. Workstream UpdatesSimulation and Immersive Technologies New immersive technology case studies have landed! Many of the pilot projects using TEL virtual reality and augmented reality equipment have started to come to an end. The Simulation and Immersive Technology team have been working with the pilot sites to summarise their main findings and to use these to create more than 30 case studies, now available on the learning hub. The findings give a true picture of how immersive technologies can be used to support workforce education and meet the needs of the NHS Long Term Workforce Plan. We would like to thank all the contributors and learners who have provided information to make these case studies a reality. The case studies are available in the Simulation and Immersive Technologies catalogue on the Learning Hub. Nursing in Adult Prison Healthcare Settings in University of Salford’s immersive roomThe simulation team at Salford are delivering the Nursing in Adult Prison Healthcare Settings programme utilising their Immersive Room and Healthcare Simulation Suite. By using the Immersive room, the students are encouraged to work together in a group and discuss the learning points within the programme, all while still being immersed in the prison environment without the use of a headset. Dr Leah Greene, Head of Simulation, School of Health & Society, University of Salford said: ‘We are utilising the ‘Nursing in Adult Prison Healthcare Settings’ interactive resources as part of a comprehensive 2-day pre-prison placement learning package for students assigned to prison placements. These resources are also integrated into a simulation week for second-year nursing students. Having participated in the initial user testing, it is wonderful to see these resources being extensively used and firmly embedded in nurse education within the School of Health & Society. The resources are immersive, interactive, and realistic, helping to demystify perceptions about healthcare in prisons while opening up opportunities for discussions about future careers in prison healthcare”. If you are an Higher Education Institution looking to include the programme as part of your teaching materials, please contact the Simulation and Immersive Technologies team: england.simimmtech@nhs.net. TEL at Health Excellence Through Technology 2024Last month the TEL team supported a panel discussion at the Health Excellence Through Technology (HETT) Conference on the theme of ‘Technology Enhanced Learning: XR to Support Future of Health and Care Professionals’. Joined by colleagues from primary care, health science, innovation and the creative arts, the conversation captured current examples of practice as well as looked at future opportunities presented by the Long Term Workforce Plan. To find out more about XR opportunities in TEL, email the Simulation and Immersive Technologies team: england.simimmtech@nhs.net. Simulation and Immersive Technologies team to attend ASPiH ConferenceTEL’s Simulation and Immersive Technologies programme are exhibiting at the upcoming Association for Simulation Practice in Healthcare (ASPIH) annual conference in Edinburgh in early November, which has the theme of Transformative Simulation. We are delivering and facilitating three workshops:
If you are at the conference, please come and say hello, we’d love to see you. National Simulation SurveyAs part of its 15th anniversary celebrations, the Association for Simulated Practice in Healthcare (ASPiH), is launching a national simulation survey. The survey aims to take a snapshot of how, where and when simulation activities are being used in the United Kingdom and Ireland (and more widely). Data from the survey will be used to make recommendations for educators, clinical teams, regulators, commissioners and other national bodies to support the wider adoption and utilisation of simulation within healthcare education and clinical practice. The survey will be open for 4-6 weeks and can be completed here. Supporting TELTEL NetworkThe NHS England Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) Network has been developed to enable TEL professionals from the NHS, higher education and social care to connect with each other, ask questions, collaborate on TEL projects and share successes. Did you know there is a dedicated TEL Network FutureNHS workspace set up to enable this to happen? Not a member yet? Join the TEL Network and request access to the TEL Network Workspace. TEL Network CPD Session - A Day in the Life of a Simulation CentreDate: Monday 25 November 2024 Time: 10am to 11.30am Register here to secure your place. Simulation centres aim to provide a range of realistic situations in which staff can learn, practice and reflect on their skills in a safe environment. This session is designed for technology enhanced learning professionals and through a day in the life of a simulation centre format, aims to clarify what simulation means in a healthcare context. To receive invitations to future CPD sessions and other events, join the TEL Network. Virtual and Hybrid Learning FacultyThe Virtual and Hybrid Learning Faculty is celebrating its 3rd Anniversary in November. Visit the eLfH website, Learning Hub and WT&E social channels over the month to learn more and help us celebrate. VHLF Autumn 2024 CPD SeriesFull details of all Autumn masterclasses are available on the Learning Hub. All masterclasses are 90mins long and will share evidence-based best practice considerations and principles. They are structured to follow the “you share, we share” approach. You do not need to attend these in
order- please pick and choose sessions as required. VHLF Certification and CPD ServiceFrom September 2024, the Virtual & Hybrid Learning Faculty (VHLF) programme will be introducing certification and a Continuing Professional Development (CPD) service. Users accessing certain VHLF resources on the Learning Hub will be able to download a certificate once they have accessed and completed a resource. CoP members who attend masterclasses (either virtually or in-person) can apply for VHLF certification and CPD at two different levels- standard and advanced. Applications to obtain certification and CPD will open once the season has ended. For the Autumn 2024 season, this will be available from early December. For further information about the VHLF Certification and CPD service, please view this resource on the Learning Hub: https://learninghub.nhs.uk/Resource/55352/Item Why not visit the Learning Hub to access the VHLF catalogues: https://learninghub.nhs.uk/catalogue/VHLF-getting-started To join the VHLF Community of Practice (COP), please register here. If you have any queries, please email: england.VHLF@nhs.net PlatformsPlatform updates CataloguesCatalogues are a way of containing and organising several resources in a dedicated space on the Learning Hub. We have recently added the ‘browse catalogue’ feature in the Learning Hub, making it easier to discover catalogues on the platform and look at available learning material. New elearning for healthcare contentNew elearning for healthcare (elfh) content is being uploaded directly to the Learning Hub. We have also moved 71 existing elfh elearning programmes to the Learning Hub, which will become our single, learning platform. Our Digital Learning Solutions (DLS) platform provides access to basic digital literacy training. Organisations can register as a ‘centre’, appoint a centre manager and administrators, who can allocate training to staff members. We can confirm that the legacy tracking system has now been removed from the DLS platform following release 38. The DLS competency frameworks are still in pilot, and the paediatric critical care level 3 framework is being used across a number of paediatric units across the UK right now. If you are interested in shaping the future of the Learning Hub, please register your interest with our User Research team. If you would like to speak to someone about the TEL platforms, please email the TEL Platforms Implementation Managers. e-Learning for HealthcareNew eLearning for occupational therapists working in perinatal mental healthThree new sessions of the Perinatal Mental Health for Occupational Therapists eLearning programme have been developed in collaboration with the Royal College of Occupational Therapists and the NHS England e-Learning for health Programme.
