Compensation Matters - May 2025 banner

Kaya reader,

The weather may be cooling down as we head into Makuru season, but we are certainly not slowing down anytime soon at WorkCover WA!

There is plenty of newly released information ahead of the new financial year including updated forms and the Second edition of our Remuneration Guidelines. We are also shining the spotlight on settlements with the release of our new Settlement Registration Guide.

Our regional education and compliance approach was another focus last month as we checked in with some of our most geographically isolated stakeholders on Christmas Island. Access to vital workers compensation services and resources is crucial for people who live outside metropolitan areas. We prioritise ensuring all workers and employers, regardless of location, have access to trusted information and advice.

Read all about our new resources and recent activities below...

Focus on Settlements

Delays in settlement registration affect workers relying on settlement funds to pay for their day-to-day living expenses. It also places greater administrative and cost burdens on the parties to a settlement.

To assist the parties in lodging compliant Settlement Agreements and accompanying documents, WorkCover WA has produced a Settlement Registration Guide (the 'Guide').

The Guide includes:

  • An overview of the steps to register a Settlement Agreement.
  • A summary of common errors and how to rectify them.
  • A checklist for parties to use when lodging a Settlement Agreement.

Insurers or self-insurers who would like to attend an information session about the Guide can express their interest via email to communications@workcover.wa.gov.au.

APIA Peer Review Session

Approved Permanent Impairment Assessors (APIAs) play an important role in the workers compensation scheme by assessing an injured worker's permanent whole of person impairment.

We conduct annual peer review sessions to ensure APIAs are aware of emerging issues and trends.

On 22 May, we held a peer review session for APIAs to review and discuss musculoskeletal cases of interest. Our thanks to Dr Steven Overmeire for facilitating a productive discussion.

National Reconciliation Week

National Reconciliation Week (27 May to 3 June) is a time to learn about shared histories, cultures and achievements, and commit to carrying these lessons forward every day of the year.

We marked the occasion with a fundraising raffle and a Reconciliation Morning Tea where our staff had the opportunity to connect with culture over bush tucker and native tea.

We were pleased to raise over $430 for Red Dust and the Indigenous Literacy Foundation.

Regional Engagement

The Western Australian State Government delivers a range of services to the Indian Ocean Territories, including those related to workers compensation and injury management. WorkCover WA services in the Indian Ocean Territories are funded by the Australian Government.

Last month, we conducted a regional visit to Christmas Island. Our inspectors visited and engaged with the Christmas Island District High School, the Union of Christmas Island Workers, the Indian Ocean Group Training Association and Christmas Island Hospital.

They conducted presentations and information sessions for locals to increase awareness of worker and employer rights and obligations in relation to workers compensation and injury management.

Our translated publications and resources were in high demand. We also promoted availability of translator and interpreter assistance when accessing WorkCover WA services.
