Reserve closure likely on Mount IronWhile the summer to date has been hot, dry, and perfect for time spent outdoors and down by the lake, it also means an increased risk of wildfire in our reserves. To help reduce the risk of such an event, we've introduced new reserve closure protocols which mean reserves will be closed on days when the elevated fire danger is unsafe. Due to the predicted wildfire weather conditions, it is likely that we will need to close the Mount Iron Reserve in Wānaka later this week and potentially into the weekend. This e-newsletter is intended as early notice of that potential action. We’re monitoring conditions closely and if a reserve closure is put in place, we’ll notify the community through onsite signage, messaging to local news outlets, on social media, community text alert and the QLDC website. Be sure to sign up for our ‘e-text’ service to be messaged when a reserve needs to close or has been reopened at Community Text Alerts - QLDC Please be aware that Mount Iron Reserve is already subject to a year-round total fire ban. The new reserve closure protocols will now be implemented when fire indices reach extreme levels to remove the potential for ignition to occur and to reduce the risk to life or property.
