Here at Strathfield, our focus is on forward planning, and we are taking proactive steps to focus our attention on realising the strategic opportunities in front of us, with the Homebush/ Parramatta Road Precinct and Strathfield Town Centre being key. This is an opportunity to secure our housing delivery for the next 10 years and beyond, meeting our obligation to deliver new and affordable housing. We will be working with the NSW Department of Planning and Minister for Planning and Public Spaces to help us achieve our goals. Council is also actively prioritising diverse housing options. It is evident that our community is experiencing an outflow of residents who are looking to downsize from their larger homes and relocating to other local government areas due to the unavailability of mid-range housing choices in our area. Our planning team is actively exploring ways to introduce low-maintenance townhouses and duplexes to our locality. It is essential for us to provide our long-term residents with the opportunity to remain in our community. Council will be consulting with the community on options to improve housing diversity and choice in the coming month. Vale Mr George Hallworth former alderman of Strathfield Council. George and his wife Catherine made their home in Strathfield for over 50 years and raised a family of four children and were proud grandparents and great-grandparents. George operated a general store at Cave Road, Strathfield for many years, where he frequently interacted with residents, and developed experience in running a small business in the Strathfield area. As well as being an Alderman and sitting on many committees on Council, George was heavily involved in the community life of the Strathfield area and freely gave his time to many local organisations including Rotary, Meals on Wheels, Red Cross, Probus and School for Seniors. His services were recognised when he was awarded the Centenary Medal in 2001 for his long service to the community through the Strathfield School for Seniors and Meals on Wheels. Lastly, we welcomed 75 new Australian citizens from 16 different countries this week. Congratulations to those who attended, you have made one of the most meaningful decisions a person can make, you have sought and gained citizenship from a country different from that of your birth. I’m proud that in Strathfield we have a strong and diverse community that is a terrific representation of Australia’s multiculturalism. Have a wonderful week everyone, and as always if you require any assistance, please do not hesitate in contacting me on cr.kpensabene@strathfield.nsw.gov.au
