Bartholen, 28 June 1949. Homebush Postman, Mordey Pattinson Homebush postman, Mordey Edward Pattinson retired in 1949 after almost 50 years of service. Here he is exhibiting his well-worn shoes. No doubt he would have been a very familiar figure in the local area as he delivered thousands of letters and packages over so many years. In 1909 Strathfield Council complained to the Postmaster General’s Department about the ‘sweating’ of local postmen whose workloads were heavy. In an era when all correspondence was by mail, the postman’s delivery was eagerly awaited. Mordey grew up in Jones Street, Croydon, later settling in Lidcombe and retiring to 49 Underwood Road, Homebush.
