The Story Behind Valentine's Day

Valentine's Day, celebrated on February 14th, has a fascinating history that combines ancient Roman traditions and Christian customs.

Ancient Roots: The origins of Valentine's Day can be traced back to the Roman festival of Lupercalia, a fertility celebration held on February 15th. During this festival, men would sacrifice animals and use their hides to whip women, believing it would enhance fertility.

Saint Valentine: The day is named after Saint Valentine, a Christian martyr. One popular legend suggests that Valentine was a priest who secretly performed marriages for young couples, defying Emperor Claudius II's ban on marriages. He was eventually executed for his actions.

Christianization: In the 5th century, Pope Gelasius I replaced Lupercalia with St. Valentine's Day to Christianize the pagan festival. Over time, it evolved into a day to celebrate love and romance.

Medieval Romanticism: By the Middle Ages, Valentine's Day had become associated with romantic love, partly due to the writings of Geoffrey Chaucer, who linked the day to the mating season of birds.

Today, Valentine's Day is celebrated worldwide with the exchange of cards, flowers, chocolates, and other tokens of affection.

Last Sunday, our team members Marce and Kyzzy had an incredible time at the Brazilian Carnaval on the Gold Coast.

This vibrant event brought together families, friends, and community members to immerse in the rich traditions of Brazilian culture through music, dance, art, food, and festivities.

As a multicultural organization, we celebrate diversity in all its forms. Even though Marce and Kyzzy are Brazilian, Tracey shared how much she valued the opportunity to learn about their culture, embracing the experience with an open heart and taking part in the celebrations.

It was a beautiful reminder of how cultural exchange strengthens our community!
