We are particularly proud of the Congressional recognition the college recently received for its advancement of ethnic studies (see story below). The Wilkinson Student Advisory and Leadership Council has been busy organizing our second annual Wilkinson Winterfest – a bit of fun and relaxation in December before we head into finals. Musco Center Photo by Karen Tapia. ‘I Will Never Be Able to Forget’: George Takei Shares Internment Experience with Chapman Actor, author, and activist George Takei appeared before a packed house at Chapman's Musco Center for the Arts as part of Wilkinson College's Engaging the World: Leading the Conversation on Ethnic Studies (ETW) initiative to bring his powerful story of childhood imprisonment in a Japanese American internment camp during World War II. Wilkinson College Receives Congressional Recognition Wilkinson College was awarded congressional recognition for the addition of its Asian American Studies minor program, which will officially launch in fall 2023, as well as its Ethnic Studies initiatives driven by the ETW 2022: Leading the Conversation on Ethnic Studies series. Congressman J. Luis Correa (D-46th District) presented the Certificate of Special Recognition while attending the ETW keynote lecture by George Takei. Life? or Theater?: A Compilation of Artwork by Charlotte Salomon Wilkinson College and the Rodgers Center for Holocaust Education Inspired by Mentors and Indigenous Heritage, Edna Best Yokum Helps Students Find Their Way Alumna Edna Best Yokum ('09, French, Political Science), professor of anthropology and sociology at Eastern New Mexico University-Roswell, discussed her time at Chapman, the mentorship of Wilkinson College professors Paul Apodaca and Ron Steiner, and her experience assisting a community rich with Native American and Latinx culture and traditions to expand the horizons of students with few resources or familial links to the college experience. Career Corner: Career Tips from The Lonely Island Comedian Jorma Taccone Wilkinson College hosted producer, director, actor, and author Jorma Taccone for a discussion of his career and creative experiences, from his time at Saturday Night Live (SNL) to his current success as one-third of the Emmy award-winning comedy trio, The Lonely Island, and the grand opportunities that sprouted along the way. Lisa Wong ('25, Broadcast Journalism and Documentary; Visual Journalism, Chinese) highlighted the biggest takeaways from his talk. Faculty Books: Alicia Kozameh, Ofrenda de propia piel 2 Professor of English Alicia Kozameh's latest publication, Ofrenda de propia piel 2 (Alción Editora, 2022) is a continuation of Kozameh's 2004 collection of short stories about the lives of women who were political prisoners in Argentina during the 1976-1983 dictatorship— Kozameh, herself, among them. Henley and his wife, Ludie Henley, have been generous contributors to Wilkinson College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences. Their generosity has supported the research within the Ludie and David C. Henley Social Sciences Research Lab, covered travel costs for students through the Henley Social Sciences Travel Fund, funded the Alpha Mu Gamma
chapter of Phi Alpha Theta within the Department of History, and celebrated the successes of our graduating classes at the Henley Social Sciences Awards Ceremony.
