This month, it is time for everyone’s favorite UC San Diego event, Hearts & Scholars. This annual celebration of student support and success will be held virtually this year and celebrate donors to scholarships and success programs, including the Chancellor’s Associates Scholarship. It’s an amazing opportunity to meet Chancellor’s Associates Scholars and connect with donors giving back to UC San Diego, and you are all invited. Graduates of the Last Decade (GOLD) Challenge Announcement
Thanks to Chancellor’s Associates alumni donors Sandy Timmons ’81, Rick Sandstrom ’72, MS ’76, PhD ’79, Jerri Malana ’86, Jonathan Asch ’94 and Gillian Hemingway, and Christopher Ficara ’06 – qualifying gifts from GOLD alumni will be matched dollar-for-dollar through the Chancellor’s Associates GOLD Challenge! Know someone who graduated from UC San Diego within the last ten years? Encourage them to join Chancellor’s Associates and take advantage of this special opportunity.
Class of 2010-2014 ($1,000): With a gift of $500, the GOLD Challenge provides a 1:1 match, extending Chancellor’s Associates recognition at the $1,000 GOLD level.
Class of 2015-2020 ($500): With a gift of $250, the GOLD Challenge provides a 1:1 match, extending Chancellor’s Associates recognition at the $500 GOLD level.

Patrick Tracy ’16
Patrick Tracy ’16 remembers vividly the moment he found out he received the Chancellor’s Associates Scholarship. “The moment I received the letter was the moment that changed my life. I looked at the paper with disbelief—Is this real? Why me? Did they make a mistake? After those doubts went away, it was pure shock, joy and excitement that my dream was becoming true. I was getting one step closer to fulfilling my dreams of success and making my family proud. I (along with my sister) would be the first generation that would go to university in our family. I was so appreciative that people could be so kind as to help someone they never met achieve their dreams,” he says.
A recent graduate of USC’s School of Pharmacy, Patrick is living his dream of working as a pharmacist in San Diego. His UC San Diego education gave him the confidence and a strong foundation to believe that he could achieve success. As our newest Chancellor’s Associate donor through the GOLD Challenge, Patrick hopes to instill that confidence in more students like him. He says, “I chose to give back to the Chancellor’s Associates Scholarship because I can vividly remember how I felt when I received my scholarship and I would love to make someone else feel that same way. I have always loved helping people.”

Triton Leaders Conference
February 5–6, All Day
Start off 2021 with a truly inspiring weekend of advocacy and empowerment at the Triton Leaders Conference: Advancing Equity. Join us online, as we explore the themes of equity, diversity and inclusion with a lineup of more than 20 dynamic session speakers and esteemed thought leaders representing multiple disciplines and viewpoints. For the Love of Craft – Virtual Craft Center Preview
Week of February 11 – 14
Join the Craft Center for a multi-day online event to meet some of the new program instructors and participate in virtual craft demonstrations and hands-on workshops for students, staff, faculty, retirees and all community members! Some will be pre-recorded, on demand videos you can watch at your convenience and other offerings will be scheduled live Zoom sessions where you can interact with instructors and fellow participants. Chancellor’s Associates Virtual Colloquium
Featuring Professor John Evans: The Ethical Debate About Human Gene Editing
Wednesday, February 17 at 12 p.m. PST
In recent news, a Chinese scientist facilitated the genetic modification of two children whose genomes were “edited.” John Evans, a professor of sociology, will discuss the debate over “human gene editing.” Where is the line drawn? Is it moral? The only consensual restriction imposed to gene editing seems to be the limitations of our current scientific knowledge. But what happens as this knowledge expands? What does the future look like with genetically engineered or modified children? To find out, register here.
