NEERO 2022: Announcing Award Winners!

The NEERO Board is thrilled to announce the 2020 Award Winners. Congratulations!

Rubovits Award for Best Paper: Carie Ruggiano

Carie Ruggiano (University of Massachusetts Amherst) has been awarded the Rubovits Award from the NEERO 2021 Conference for her paper, "Adapt and Serve the Community!: Voices of Families of Youth of Color in Predominantly White, Rural Communities."

Carie earned her B.A in English and Journalism at UMass Amherst and her M.A.T in English Education at Teachers College. She began her doctoral journey to better understand and improve the experiences of young people of color, living and attending school in predominantly white rural contexts, in large part due to her experiences as a mother in a transracial adoptive family. Scholarly interests include: antiracist and culturally sustaining pedagogy; critical whiteness studies; rural education; critical and multimodal literacies; digital storytelling; teaching of writing; secondary English teacher education, training, and recruitment.

Kim Fries Award for Early Career Distinction: Dr. Katharine Covino

Dr. Katharine Covino (Fitchburg State University) has been awarded the NEERO 2022 Kim Fries Award for early career distinction.

Dr. Covino, Associate Professor of Education Studies, teaches writing, literature, and teacher-preparation classes at Fitchburg State University. Three areas of current scholarship focus on a) critical pedagogy in literacy-learning classrooms, b) applying indigenous lenses to examine cultural myths, and c) collaborating with middle, secondary, and post-secondary teachers on issues related to literacy praxis. Prior to teaching at the university level, she taught middle school and high school in Austin, Texas. She is also a children’s book author. Two recent books seek to support children and their families in understanding, processing, and addressing the challenges of living through a global pandemic in a funny, accessible, kid-friendly way. An upcoming book uses humor and science to help kids use and not abuse digital technology.

John Schmitt Award for Outstanding Graduate Research: Abby Emerson

Abby Emerson (Teachers College, Columbia University) has been awarded the John Schmitt Award for Outstanding Graduate Research for her paper, "The entanglement of emotions, whiteness, and practicing teachers in antiracist teacher education: A literature review."

Abby is a doctoral candidate in the Department of Curriculum & Teaching at Teachers College, Columbia University. She is currently researching antiracist teacher education, with attention to emotions and how this work plays out in school-based contexts. Her research also explores whiteness, White supremacy, and their manifestations in the formal and informal spaces where children are educated. Previously, she was an elementary school teacher for 10 years in NYC public schools. During that time she was named the 2018 National Association for Multicultural Education’s Critical Teacher of the Year. Her work can be found in Bank Street Occasional Papers, Radical Teacher, and Urban Education.

NEERO 2022 Conference "Expanding Equity in Educational Research" (April 6 - 8, 2022)

As a global community, we continue to grapple with ongoing and persistent crises including the COVID-19 pandemic, institutionalized and systemic racism, climate change, and social and economic disparities that manifest in and out of education. As a research community, we call on educational researchers, practitioners, activists, and policy makers, to rise up and leverage their expertise to identify, critique, and respond to inequities in education, and expand equity in and through educational research.

A vital aspect to this work is providing a forum for novice and expert researchers, policy makers, practitioners, community organizers, and activists to come together to share research and engage in critical dialogue.
