24 April 2025

Cr John-Paul Baladi, Mayor of Strathfield

Dear Residents,

I hope everyone enjoyed their Easter break and spent quality time with family and friends. This is a time to reflect on the blessings of life, to embrace hope and to share kindness with those around us.

This morning my fellow Councillors and I were delighted to attend the inaugural Battle of Kapyong Memorial Service at Ismay Reserve. On behalf of Strathfield Council, I wish to thank the Cumberland RSL sub-branch for their invaluable efforts in bringing this event to fruition with Council. We were joined by many distinguished guests including the Consul General of the Republic of Korea in Sydney.

I encourage our community to join us 10am tomorrow at Davey Square Reserve in commemoration of the Australian service men and women who have served our country in all conflicts, wars and peacekeeping operations. Strathfield Rotary and Lugarno Lions Club will be serving up a community barbecue once the service has ended.

If you ever need to speak to me about a local issue, please call on 0478 054 241 or email me on cr.jpbaladi@strathfield.nsw.gov.au

Together, we can make a difference

Domestic violence can be a silent crime, but together we can break that silence.

Earlier this year, Auburn Police Area Command released their domestic violence video to highlight the importance of addressing domestic violence and improving access to related services, particularly within multicultural communities. Strathfield Council was delighted to play a part in this initiative.

Click the link below to watch the video to see how together we can make a difference.

Henry Talbot Hammond

Henry Talbot Hammond (SERN: 4506), a mechanic from Lindisfarne 56 Churchill Avenue, Strathfield was badly wounded at Fromelles on 19 July 1916 with the 54th Battalion. In 1917 he joined the Royal Flying Corps, serving with Charles Kingsford-Smith. Hammond was taken prisoner of war during September 1917 and imprisoned at Clausthal, Germany. He helped dig a tunnel to escape but it was discovered and the prisoners were punished. He was given the name ‘Bunny’ as a result. Hammond received an MBE as Wing Commander in 1944.
Fromelles remains the most catastrophic 24 hours suffered by Australian troops.

Lest we forget.
