Melbourne Day flag-raising ceremony

Celebrating 182 years

We're calling on schools to attend the official flag-raising ceremony on Melbourne Day, 30 August, at Enterprize Park.

You organise a class excursion, and we'll organise your transport.

It's a fantastic way to get students of all ages learning about Melbourne and our city's history.

The event will be live on radio 3AW, with the station holding a special Melbourne Day outside broadcast of the Neil Mitchell Morning program from 8.30am to noon.

The much-loved Victoria Police Pipe Band will perform. Highly acclaimed Aboriginal artist Stan Dryden will hold a Welcome to Country. And you can meet Melbourne's "first settlers" - the Enterprize re-enactment crew in period costume, including Gilbert, the Tassie tabby, our city's first cat.

Teachers, contact Melbourne Day executive officer Sarah Styring for details: ExecutiveOfficer@MelbourneDay.com.au or phone 0408 008 052.

Junior Lord Mayor Competition: Closes Monday, 14 August, 5pm

There's still time. But hurry.

Entry is free and open to Victorian students in Grades Five to Seven (10 to 12 years of age).

To enter is easy: Students simply answer nine questions (answers found on the Melbourne Day website).

Not only does the winner get to add the title to his or her resume, His/Her Worship will lunch in style - with the whole class, thanks to Grill'd Healthy Burgers.

The winner will be the guest of honour at a special event at one of the chain's city restaurants and gets to raise the flag on Melbourne Day with the Lord Mayor, cuts the official birthday cake, appears in the Moomba parade, and performs other fun duties.

Teachers, why not get your whole class to enter?

The competition, thanks to 13CABS, aims to raise awareness about the city and its history.
