Strathfield eNews No images? Click here 4 August 2022Cr Matthew Blackmore, Mayor of Strathfield A big thank you to the 260+ residents who turned up to National Tree Day on Sunday to assist in the planting of over 4,000 trees and shrubs at Hudson Park! Thank you to Strathfield Rotary as well, whose BBQ hit the spot as always. In other news, my Mayoral Minute was passed in relation to Council's opposition to Developer Contribution Reforms. These reforms, proposed by the State Government, will mean that contributions for developments in your local area will be directed to a state controlled regional infrastructure fund, with no requirement to spend these funds in the Council area that they were collected from. The financial burden on our Council could be as much as $5 million annually, and the State Government is suggesting the shortfall could be compensated by increasing your Council rates. I am strongly opposed to these reforms, and I ask residents to email me your opposition and I will forward your emails with my own submission. If you need any assistance with a local matter please contact me 0406 099 048 or cr.mblackmore@strathfield.nsw.gov.au Wackadoo! Its Bluey! THROWBACK THURSDAYThe Homebush Saleyards Sydney’s first public stock saleyards opened at Homebush in 1870 before being relocated to Flemington in 1882. These yards served the needs of Sydney until 1967 when saleyards were finally built alongside the State Abattoir at Homebush Bay. Until 1915 animals were herded by drovers along Parramatta Road on Monday and Thursday nights to the former abattoir at Glebe Island. Can you imagine it? Later, when traffic was much heavier, livestock still had to cross Parramatta Road. Today, Sydney Markets stand on the saleyards site.
