100% Container Reporting Update – Container reporting skyrockets

Tēnā koutou

Our new reporting regime for sea containers is off to a great start with over 80% of full containers reported in July! This is double the reporting from June and a massive improvement on the previous monthly average of 10%.

Reporting on empty containers handled by depots and ports is also improving with 18% reported in July, compared with 2% in January. Depots and ports have been busy adapting their systems and working with our team and we are expecting much more reporting in the coming months.

Thank you to all the TFs and APs who are doing their part to protect our biosecurity.  We understand that this change is still fairly new however, we will be taking firmer action on compliance over time and immediate action where appropriate.

A reminder of what we are looking at:

  • Whether a container is authorised to be at a TF
  • Whether there is an inspection result for a container
  • Whether we have been alerted to any high-risk detections. For example, the AP should both call us and record any brown marmorated stink bug detections.
  • General TF performance, including any reporting trends that allow us to improve the quality of inspections.

What we are learning so far / Handy tips:

  • Most of the alerts we get about unauthorised containers are due to entering the wrong TF code in the reporting system. Pay attention to data entry.
  • Sometimes you can’t find your container in the system. You are not required to submit a check to MPI if a Quarantine Officer has conducted a Container Audit or Supervised Devan inspection and MPI has provided you with a Release BACC for the container. If MPI has not inspected and released the container and you still cannot find the container in the system, please contact us at seacontainer@mpi.govt.nz
  • Check out our user guide for quick solutions to common problems with using the portal.
