Verification during the COVID-19 Response
It’s very important that food verification services continue during the COVID-19 response to make sure food safety is managed properly. New Zealand Food Safety has set up a Remote Check system of Food Act 2014 businesses as an interim measure to replace most on-site verifications. Read more.
Safe Practice Checks for Food Businesses

The Co-Regulatory Priorities Panel (CPP) is working on three projects based on systems, behaviours, guidance. As part of the guidance project, the CPP will be contacting all councils over the next few weeks to ask some questions about Quality Management Systems (QMS). One aim of this work is to identify which councils don’t have a QMS and why. Don’t worry if you don’t have a QMS – it is one of the items the CPP guidance project is exploring. Read more.

New Zealand Food Safety is seeking feedback on proposed Notices under the Animal Products Act 1999 and the Wine Act 2003. The consultation for the proposed Animal Products Notice: New Zealand Animal Product Standards closes on 13 September 2021 and the consultation for the Proposed Wine Notices closes on 20 September 2021. Updated CPD Peer Review Guidance
The final step in the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) programme for verifiers is the CPD Peer Review. Verifiers are expected to undergo one CPD Peer Review per CPD period, before 30 September. Based on feedback from verifiers, we have issued new guidance on the CPD Peer Review. Read more.
Mandatory Fortification of Flour for Bread-making
New Zealand has adopted a Joint-Food Standard under the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code which mandates the addition of folic acid to non-organic wheat flour in bread. There is a two-year transition period to allow flour millers time to implement this change. Visit: Folate and the addition of folic acid to food. Read more.
