Seachtain Na Gaeilge

Tír gan teanga, tír gan anam.  This was kept in mind and could be seen on many posters around the school this week which was decorated with flags, balloons, and posters for Seachtain na Gaeilge as we had a brilliant celebration of our language and culture with plenty of events to mark the occasion.  We got to hear some wonderful Irish music and poetry in Assembly each morning, and there were activities going on every day.  Everyone got involved in céilithe, Gaelic football matches, poc fada competitions, and quizzes as Gaeilge. Seachtain iontach a bhí ann agus bhaineamar go léir an-sult as.  Seachtain na Gaeilge agus Lá Fhéile Pádraig Sona Daoibh!

International Women's Day

On 8 March our school community celebrated International Women's Day.  This annual celebration is an important time to reflect on the achievements of women to date but also to highlight the many gender-based challenges we still face.  In anticipation of the week pupils held two Assemblies - the first was to raise awareness for the night walk for Women's Aid and the second was to celebrate our pupils' female heroes.  The school was decorated with posters, badges, and ribbons and teachers were encouraged to introduce women's history to their lesson plans during the week.  The night walk took place on the evening of International Women's Day and despite the weather more than one hundread people turned up.  Together we walked a route along the river Dodder and there was a lovely atmosphere of community and support for one another.  On Thursday Leader of the Labour Party Ivana Bacik TD joined us in the W B Yeats Library for a talk on women in politics.  Bacik is committed to the importance of changing the culture of politics to enable more women to enter the political sphere through confidence building.  Our school is committed to raising awareness of gender based issues beyond just this week.

Vinnie Murray Plate Final

On 8 March The High School Senior Cup Team competed in the Plate Final of the Vinnie Murray Cup.  The game took place in St Mary’s Rugby Club against St Gerard’s School.  The game started quickly and The High School were successful in going 8-0 up in the first 10 minutes thanks to a try from Ethan Jones.  The opposition wasted no time pushing back and with the scores close at half time it was all to play for.  A quick try by our opponents in the second half was a tough blow and proved too big a gap to close.  The game finished 45-34: it was disappointing but there was a lot to be proud of.  Thanks are due to all who helped out this year, notably Mr McDermott, Mr Barnard,  Mr Walker, Mr Hardy, and Ms Meeke as well to all who came out to support throughout the year.  We'd like to bid a fond farewell to the Form 6 pupils who played their last game for The High School and we wish next year's team the best of luck going forward.

Form 1 League Victory

The Form 1 Girls Basketball team have had a brilliant season this year.  Everyone put in their maximum effort at matches and training- there was always a positive atmosphere on the court.  Dribbling skills and shooting techniques have improved considerably over the last few months and we've all mastered the basics.  Everyone has pulled together as a team on the court and on the sidelines.  We played our final game in Oblate Hall, Inchicore defeating Gael Coláiste na Phiarsaigh in the final 24-6 and coming out of our League unbeaten.  We are already looking forward to the next season.

Form 2 Technical Graphics

Form 2 Technical Graphics pupils had great fun recently using the school 3D  printer to realise some of their impressive SolidWorks creations.  SolidWorks is a solid modeling computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-aided engineering application.  It is a wonderful way to use technology in a creative way as part of product design.

Minor Girls Hockey Tour

On 3 March the Minor Girls squad went on the hockey trip to Tipperary and Cork.  We played two matches on the way at Ursuline Secondary School and Bandon Grammar School. Our A team won their matches and the B team lost one match and drew against Bandon. After our matches Bandon Grammar kindly provided dinner and then we went to the hotel in Clonakility.  We got ready and headed down to the cinema to watch a film, played some games, and made song routines.  On Saturday morning we had a swimming session, lovely buffet breakfast, and played couple of rounds of crazy golf before hopping on the bus to come home to Dublin.  On the way home we stopped for lunch and then finished the drive home.  We all had so much fun!
