APU Alumni Stories

Joseph "Joey" Olsen,
BSW ’09

Olsen obtained an internship with the Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) during his last year at Azusa Pacific. He went on to work for Los Angeles County for the next four and a half years before Olsen and his family relocated to Northern California. His experience in child welfare strengthened his client-centered approach and assessment skills, opening his eyes in a profound new way. A lot of the individuals he served are viewed by their families, society, and even themselves, at times, as “the least of these.” Through his work, he came to realize we are all a few steps away from tragedy and the importance of healthy coping.

APU Alumni: Apply to Be a Weekly Spiritual Mentor to an APU Student!

We invite APU Alumni to apply to become a spiritual mentor to a current student through the Discipleship Mentoring program. No matter where alumni are located, we work to match you with a student for weekly, 60-minute virtual Zoom sessions. If mentors are local, pairs are also welcome to meet face-to-face. Sessions are focused on the spiritual formation of the mentee. Mentoring pairs may choose to use the weekly sessions for study/discussion of portions of the Bible or a Christian book together, to spend time in prayer together, listening, and to offer support and guidance. If interested, please fill out the Mentor Application. Upon review, you will be contacted for an interview, and asked to provide a reference. Mentors must also complete a virtual training and will be supplied with the Mentor Manual and other resources. Matching initially takes place the first month of each semester (September or January), but we continue to match throughout the year according to sign-ups. Please apply before Feb. 28th 2022 to be matched for the Spring semester. We look forward to finding you your spiritual mentee!
