NWTD News - October 2025

As Tasmania’s energy demands increase, TasNetworks needs to strengthen the state’s electricity transmission network. The North West Transmission Developments (NWTD) include new and upgraded transmission lines, substations and switching stations.

The developments will support new renewable energy developments and generate significant benefits and opportunities for Tasmanian communities and businesses. Watch explainer video

Strategic Benefit Payment for private landholders

To support the delivery of a modern electricity grid for Tasmania that benefits communities and consumers, the State Government has established a Strategic Benefit Payment (SBP) scheme for new major transmission projects.

The SBP represents landholders’ share in the benefits of a project, acknowledging their valued contribution in helping protect Tasmania’s energy future.

For private landholders directly impacted by stage one of the NWTD, an SBP of $200,000 per kilometre + CPI to be paid in annual instalments over 20 years is being offered.

The SBP, facilitated by TasNetworks on behalf of the State Government, is comparable to those being implemented in other states on the mainland.

The SBP is in addition to any compensation payable under the Land Acquisition Act 1993.

TasNetworks has engaged landholders and key stakeholders, including TasFarmers, since 2022 to support the State Government to arrive at a fair and equitable SBP amount.

TasNetworks CEO Sean McGoldrick said TasNetworks is pleased to have achieved an outcome that duly acknowledges Tasmanian farmers for their contribution to our energy future.

“We recognise the importance of earning farmers’ trust and co-operation, just as we recognise the importance of upgrading our network to carry the cleaner and cheaper electricity of the future,” Dr McGoldrick said.

“I thank TasFarmers and landowners for being good partners on this journey – working hard to balance the needs of farmers with the needs of Tasmanian electricity customers and industries.”

Conclusion of public exhibition - permit application

Public exhibition of the NWTD permit application concluded on 18 October.

The permit application, accompanying documentation and submissions can be viewed on the Tasmanian Planning Commission (TPC) website.

TasNetworks is now working with the TPC and the Commonwealth to respond to the 28 submissions received, particularly those relating to Matters of National Environmental Significance (MNES).

Construction costs - webinar recording

TasNetworks will submit a contingent project application to the Australian Energy Regulator to obtain the revenue allowances for construction and delivery works associated with Stage 1 of the NWTD.

A contingent project application determination is required for TasNetworks to recover the efficient costs of delivering the NWTD.

A webinar was held to provide information about the NWTD project and construction costs and to provide an overview of transmission charges.

The recording of the webinar and presentation slides are available here.

Where we've been this month

Burnie Show

Our team had a great time at the Burnie Show despite the windy weather. It was a pleasure engaging with community members about the NWTD project and the broader work we do at TasNetworks. Our mini golf activity was a hit with the kids—and a few grown-ups too! Thanks to everyone who stopped by, asked questions, or shared feedback. Your insights help us improve and stay connected with the communities we serve.

Wynyard Tulip Festival

We had a blooming good time at the Wynyard Tulip Festival despite yet another windy day! It was a fantastic opportunity to chat with locals about the NWTD project and the broader work happening across TasNetworks.

Our ‘Power Pups’ photobooth competition was a crowd favourite—thank you to everyone who brought their furry friends along to join the fun! We loved seeing the creativity and personality of each pup, and we’re thrilled to support Bandanna Day with a $250 donation. Congratulations to the winning pup Shady, who captured the most hearts (and reactions!) on Facebook.

Community Benefits Sharing Workshops

Two workshops were held in Deloraine and Burnie this month to share elements of the Community Benefits Sharing Program, gather feedback about the program and identify the level of information and support needed to apply for funding. Many helpful insights were gained, such as understanding the type of support small community groups will need to be able to identify potential initiatives, successfully apply for funding and implement approved initiatives. Stay tuned as we look to launch the program next year!

Upcoming engagement

Visit us at the Tasmanian Craft Fair in Deloraine!

Friday 31 October, Saturday 1 November and Sunday 3 November 2025
Stall #308 at Venue 3 in the Kinetic Pavilion
9am to 4pm daily

We’re excited to be part of the 44th Tasmanian Craft Fair - Australia’s largest working craft fair! With over 200 exhibitors, live entertainment, feature artists, and hands-on demonstrations, it’s a celebration of creativity and community.

Drop by the TasNetworks stall to meet our friendly NWTD team. We’ll be on hand to chat about the project, answer your questions, and hear your thoughts.

‘Power Patches’ Quilting Activity
We’re inviting Fair attendees to design a quilt patch that reflects their hopes and dreams for Tasmania’s clean energy future. These patches will be stitched together into a community quilt to showcase at future events - a colourful symbol of collective vision and creativity.

We look forward to seeing you there!
