Bright Futures - Open Evening

The Bright Futures Open Evening for incoming pupils to The High School in 2024 took place on 20 September.  About a thousand guests took a tour around the school and were shown the expansive school campus and visited featured rooms for each of the subjects taught at the school.  Each classroom presented samples of pupils' work while subject teachers explained the subject in detail.  After a couple of minutes they were guided to a different subject classroom until the tour was over.  The event began at 6.00 pm with tours concluding at 8.00 pm.  The team of helpful pupils answered any questions the parents and prospective pupils had and all left feeling satisfied and happy with the evening’s events.

Form 6 Biology Field Trip

As part of the Ecology section of our curriculum Form 6 pupils studying Biology  were tasked with conducting a comprehensive study of an ecosystem.  Specifically, we were to survey a rocky seashore habitat.  On the craggy granite coast of Sandycove we were free to roam wherever our quadrats and clipboards led us.  Every tidepool seemed a miniature underwater world of its own, bursting with life, from blooming anemones to winding polychaete worms.

HSD Journal Design Winner

The annual competition to design the front cover of the school journal once again attracted some wonderful works of art from our pupils.  This year’s winner was Anna Hoey (Deputy Head Girl) who has won €100 for art supplies.  Keep an eye out for details of next year’s journal cover competition.

Zion Parish Pet Service

On Sunday 8 October, the main service at Zion Parish church will be a Pets' Service which takes place at 10.30 am.  We should be delighted to welcome pets and their owners for this service of blessing.  We wish to extend a warm invitation to The High School community to attend.

Form 1 Religious Education

Rosh Hashanah is the Jewish New Year.  It means ‘Top of the Year’.  On this day, Jewish people celebrate the New Year and dip apple in honey so that the coming year will be sweet.  In Religious Education class on 14 August, Form 1 pupils celebrated Rosh Hashanah by dipping pieces of apples into honey and saying "Shana Tovah!" to each other. It was great fun. “Shana Tovah” and Happy New Year to the whole school community!

Badminton World Championships

Sian Williams has been coaching our school teams in Badminton for many years and has led us to numerous finals and cups.  She has continued her career as a player and is a regular medal winner in the Senior European and World Championships.  We warmly congratulate Sian on her latest success at the World Championships in Japan where she was a semi finalist in the Over 60 singles, and a winner in the doubles category with her playing partner Pam Peard.  Well done, Sian!

HSD Rugby Blitz Success

Yesterday The High School competed in its first rugby blitz as a senior team.  In our pool we played against Wesley College and St Louis High School, winning both of our matches.  We then faced Newbridge College in a final that was quite tough as many of the girls were older and played in rugby clubs.  We put up a good fight even though the game did not go our way.  On a positive note, the Junior team topped this leg of the Leinster Schools Rugby league and so remain undefeated.  We are very proud of all The High School girls' rugby teams and we look forward to representing the school again soon.

Minor A Hockey

The High School Minor A team played a brilliant game against Holy Child Killiney with two great goals from HSD. The opposition stole a goal right at the end of the match, bringing the final score to 3-2 to them in the final minute.

Form 1 English

In Form 1 English pupils have been busy studying the poems of The High School's most famous pupil (to date!), William Butler Yeats (HSD, 1881-83 ).  Here are just some of the drawings that they completed inspired by one of his very popular poems. Can you guess which one it is?

New Music Release

Congratulations to recent past pupil Leah McGrath (HSD, 2017-23) and her band Arabú on the release of their debut E.P.
