Before the UK had a national health service, it had a national restaurant service… is it time for the two to work side by side? What if everyone had access to nourishing, affordable meals, similar to how public services like parks, transport and libraries serve communities? This is the vision Nourish Scotland is promoting. They are developing the idea of Public Diners. These are community spaces that provide healthy, affordable meals made from whole foods, while supporting local producers and addressing food poverty at its root. Public Diners aim to be more than just places to eat. They are intended to foster community connection and improve overall wellbeing. Nourish Scotland sees Public Diners as part of a broader approach to making food systems more equitable and resilient. This approach tackles barriers to healthy eating that many people face, including cost, access and time. By reintroducing the concept of affordable, state-supported dining, they hope to create a lasting positive impact on public health and social equality. This Times article usefully summarises the risks and side effects of new weight loss medicines (GLP-1 Receptor Agonists) such as Mounjaro and Semaglutide. Importantly, it covers the under appreciated risks of malnutrition. The BSLM is an educational charity - we provide clinicians of all backgrounds with the skills they need to provide good quality wrap-around support for people taking these medicines. This wrap-around support needs to include a personalised assessment of nutritional status and dietary patterns, muscle mass, sleep quality, social isolation, harmful tech use, time spend sedentary, physical activity, time in nature and use of alcohol and smoking. It then needs to provide individualised interventions to support these areas to ensure these medications are safe, effective and sustainable. Want to hear more about our approach to the lifestyle medicine wrap-around support for GLP1 RA? Then come to our annual conference this year in Brighton (share link) where we will have experts such as Dr Jack Mosley, Professor Louisa Ells, Professor Oliver Mytton and Sarah Le Broque discussing what is needed when providing the best care. We had a fantastic time representing BSLM at this year’s IPM Congress in London. It was a real pleasure to meet some of our members in person and to see the growing enthusiasm for Lifestyle Medicine across the wider clinical community. Throughout the event, it was clear that more and more healthcare professionals are recognising the importance of lifestyle-focused, person-centred approaches in both prevention and treatment. The conversations we had were inspiring and reaffirmed just how relevant and needed this work is. A definite highlight was Dr David Unwin’s talk: “Drug-free T2 Diabetes Remission: How it's Done, How it's Maintained. A Practical Guide.” The room was fully engaged, and it was encouraging to see such strong interest in this area. Thanks to everyone who came by to say hello, attend the talk, or share their own experiences. We're excited about the future of Lifestyle Medicine and proud to be part of a growing movement that's changing lives for the better. Start your Lifestyle Medicine journey with the ultimate guide

On Saturday 28th June, we held our one-day Food and Mood masterclass in collaboration with Deakin University’s Food & Mood Centre at the Royal College of Physicians in London, focused on the connection between nutrition and mental health. The event brought together healthcare professionals, researchers and practitioners for a day of learning, discussion and shared insight. Sessions covered the latest evidence in nutritional psychiatry and gut microbiome science, alongside practical strategies for implementation in clinical settings. It was great to see how engaged and passionate attendees were throughout the day. The level of interest, questions and discussion reflected a growing recognition of the importance of food and lifestyle in supporting mental health. The setting provided an ideal space for reflection and connection, supporting a programme that balanced cutting-edge science with real-world application. A panel discussion on implementing lifestyle medicine in NHS mental health services sparked thoughtful conversation and genuine interest in next steps. Thank you to everyone who attended and contributed to the conversations. We look forward to building on this work and continuing to explore the role of lifestyle medicine in mental health.

Voice of Lived Experience Two of our Voice of Lived Experience Team, Emma Tomms and Jen Wilson, recently ran a successful workshop in Glasgow; "Transform Your Health: The Pillars of Lifestyle Medicine" – a focused 3-hour session designed to empower you with practical strategies to improve your wellbeing”.
The workshop looked at practical, sustainable approaches to address the root causes of health issues using the 6 pillars of Lifestyle Medicine and an additional slowing down pillar – the critical practice that helped both hosts address the emotional roots of their health challenges. The feedback from the day was fantastic and a great example of lifestyle medicine in practice!

Trial find exercise 'better than drugs' to stop cancer returning after treatment A large international study has found that regular exercise after cancer treatment can help stop the cancer from coming back — and may even work better than some medicines. The study looked at nearly 900 people who had been treated for bowel cancer. Half of them followed a personalised exercise program for three years, including activities like brisk walking. The other half were just given general health advice. The results were clear:
Asked to put the effect of exercise on cancer patients’ outcomes into context, Gralow said: “We titled [the session it was presented in] As Good as a Drug. I would have retitled it Better than a Drug, because you don’t have all the side-effects.” Doctors say this shows that physical activity is one of the most powerful tools cancer survivors can use — without the side effects of drugs.
