The 6th ENRI International Workshop on ATM and CNS (EIWAC 2019) took place on 29 – 31 October. Secretary General Christian Schleifer joined a panel on digitalisation in aviation, and discussed with the other panellists from ICAO, RTCA, NASA and JCAB on how to best accomodate new entrants and to keep up with the pace of technology from a standardisation and regulatory perspective. In a special speech on the second day of the conference, he addressed the audience and provided information on current and future EUROCAE standardisation activities, concluding with an open invitation to the present stakeholders – global standards need global participation. This visit was also an opportunity to meet with new partners, such as Narita Airport, which is interested in many of the activities related to innovative technology, preparing to accommodate the future expected increase of air traffic in Japan, especially the 2020 Olympics. ![]() ![]() In follow up to the 2018 initiative, we met again with the Tokyo University Aviation Study Group, convened by Professor Shinji Suzuki, and had a very good discussion on the involvement of Japanese stakeholders in international standardisation activities, with a special focus on regulatory environment and standardisation work for UAS and VTOL. Kawasaki Heavy Industries, is another important player in the manufacturing industry, producing aircrafts, helicopters, engines and different structural parts for several manufacturers. Diskussions showed many common areas of interest and further exchanges will take place soon. In addition we met with high level representatives of the Japanese Civil Aviation Bureau JCAB to learn more about Japan’s current aviation policy, status of the CARATS programme, challenges and future work. The visit will extend into November 2019, so stay tuned for more information in our next NEWSblog. He used the opportunity of participating to the 40th ICAO General Assembly in Montreal and extended the stay to visit EUROCAE members and partners in Canada. ![]() The first stop was at the Canadian Air Navigation Service Provider (ANSP), NAV Canada at their Headquarter in Ottawa. NAV Canada is a very active member of EUROCAE, participating in several Working Groups. Presenting EUROCAE’s current and future work programme has revealed additional areas of common interest, where NAV Canada has expertise and sees a way of becoming involved to address some of their current challenges. The second stop was at Searidge Technologies. EUROCAE Secretary General has met a young and innovative team, which is developing and deploying the advanced, virtual airport and tower solutions. ![]() Searidge is actively contributing to the EUROCAE standardisation activities in WG-100 virtual towers, and is also co-chairing the newly-launched The last stop was at the Transportation Safety Board (TSB) of Canada. Triggered by a recommendation issued for a EUROCAE standard and the annual assessment done by the TSB, EUROCAE Secretary General met with the TSB Director of Investigations/Air and delivered in person our answers to the safety recommendation. The investigation has provided EUROCAE with substantial input to update and revise our standard. We were also pleased to note that TSB’s most urgent aviation safety targets and initiatives matched nearly 100% the activity EUROCAE is currently conducting or has already addressed in its strategic outlook, the Technical Work Programme. EUROCAE and TSB agreed to look into a closer collaboration agreement between the two organisations. EUROCAE at the ACI Europe 38th TOSC meeting 17 October 2019 EUROCAE was invited to participate in the 38th Technical, Operations and Safety Committee meeting which took place 16-18 October 2019 in Copenhagen, Denmark. It was a very good opportunity for EUROCAE to presents its airport-related work programme and to get feedback from airport stakeholders on the ongoing activities and useful inputs for potentially new ones. Sergiu Marzac, Technical Programme Manager responsible for the airport domain at EUROCAE, presented a detailed report on the available standards on Advanced – Surface Movement Guidance and Control System (WG-41), FOD detection systems (WG-83), Runway Weather Information System which aims at providing support in the implementation of the Global Reporting Format (GRF) for runway surface conditions to help mitigate the risk of runway excursion (WG-109), as well as on the newly launched Airport-Collaborative Decision Making activity (WG-111). ![]() In addition, the audience was introduced to some other airport relevant working groups which could support airports to address such threats as non-cooperative drones in the airport vicinity and cyber security (WG-72). The information was well received and triggered interest of the participants in EUROCAE ongoing work. Participants agreed that a systematic information exchange between the stakeholders is very important and it will contribute to an efficient use of resources and more important – benefits for enforcing safe operations. EUROCAE will continue its cooperation with ACI Europe by contributing to the development of industry standards in support of global and regional interoperability. ECSCG first Rolling Development Plan (RDP) published The European Cyber security for aviation Standards Coordination Group (ECSCG) is a joint coordination and advisory group established to coordinate the standardisation activities related to cyber security for aviation. The group gathers experts from the European regulators and other European and international standardisation bodies and organisations active in cyber security. Launched in October 2018, the ECSCG has developed a Rolling Development Plan (RDP) listing standards existing and under development. The RDP is used to identify the gaps and needs for future standardisation activities while avoiding duplicate. The first version of the ECSCG RDP is now published here. For any further information please contact the ECSCG Secretary, Anna Guégan at anna.guegan@eurocae.net 18th meeting of the EASCG 18 October 2019 The 18th meeting of the European ATM Standards Coordination Group (EASCG) took place on 18 October 2019, at the EUROCONTROL premises in Brussels. In addition to the regular update of the Rolling Development Plan (RDP), which should be published soon on the EASCG website, the group focussed on the standardisation aspects following from the Airspace Architecture Study and which the EASCG could do to analyse which potential standards are needed, based on the AAS TP and then channel any needs identified to the standardisation process through the EASCG and SDO processes. ![]() Moreover, the result of the work on standards validation, initiated some time ago to ensure that the standards that are being developed are the right standards at the right time, validated against industry and regulatory requirements. The TF proposes to include in the various steps in the standard development process a list of activities that could be relevant to be performed to foster the validation processes. For further information and to download the latest version of the Rolling Development Plan (RDP), please go to www.eascg.eu. WG-76 is looking for expertise EUROCAE WG-76 – in a joint activity with RTCA SC-206 – is developing specifications for Data Link Services to transmit Aeronautical (AIS) and Meteorological (MET) information. To ensure the quality of the standard, WG-76 is looking for additional expertise to develop those services. In particular WG-76 is looking for representatives from ANSP, meteorological services and airspace users (meaning flight deck expertise). ![]() If you are interested to join this activity please contact the responsible Technical Programme Manager Alexander Engel at alexander.engel@eurocae.net Call for Participation |
