We are thrilled to reveal our new, interactive website and additional membership options, encouraging more art-lovers to reap the benefits of our dynamic programming. We are also delighted to announce that as of April, Dorianne Weil has taken on the role of Johannesburg Co-Chairperson alongside Della Berkowitz.

Introducing our new Johannesburg Co-Chair: Dorianne Weil

 

In April of this year, we welcomed Dori to this new position. Dori has loyally served on our SAFIM Johannesburg committee since its inception in 2015.

With her invaluable expertise and dynamism, we are enormously grateful to have her join our leadership as Co-Chairperson in Johannesburg, alongside Della Berkowitz.

SAFIM'S VENICE INSIGHTS

As shared by our Co-Chair, Marco van Embden.

 

1. The Giardini at the Venice Biennale is home to the main exhibtion, The Milk of Dreams, which features work by two South African artists, Igshaan Adams (pictured) & Bronwyn Katz.

2. The Arsenale at the Biennale includes the South African pavilion with works by Roger Ballen, Lebohang Kganye and Phumulani Ntuli.

Biennale tip: Biennale tickets cost €25 (€20 for over 65s) and are valid for 2 days. Grab a map on arrival. Giardini and Arsenale are closed on Mondays.

3. Marlene Dumas at Palazzo Grassi, a must-see show of over 100 works! When you purchase a ticket, you also get access to US artist Bruce Nauman's show at Punta della Dogana.

4. Anselm Kiefer has covered the walls of the Doge's Palace with his massive works of art. Not to be missed! Book online to avoid hours-long queues.

5. Surrealism and Magic: Enchanted Modernity at the Peggy Guggenheim Collection. Pre-booking online is essential.

6. Anish Kapoor at Gallerie Accademia: A magnificent retrospective of the British artist's work.

Venice top tip: Buy a multi-day vaporetto pass to enjoy water taxi use during your visit. Masks (maskarini) are required on public transport.

 
 

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: STEPHEN GRAHAM

 

Stephen Graham is a South African pop artist who graduated from the prestigious Central Saint Martins in London. He is best known for his intricate creations constructed from pins and crystals which sell at galleries around the globe.

Stephen has offered SAFIM members a 15% discount on available works.

NEW WORK THE ISRAEL MUSEUM

Tracey Emin sculpture installed in the Billy Rose Art Garden

 

The Mother, a monumental bronze sculpture by world-renowned artist, Tracey Emin, has been installed in the Israel Museum's sculpture garden.

The work was donated to the Museum by a consortium of donors which includes Wendy Fisher and the British Friends of the Art Museums of Israel (BFAMI), amongst others.
