Orientation Workshop in Cairns

With so many new faces in the team a two-day orientation was recently held in Cairns to officially welcome everyone. This was a great opportunity for the whole team to get together for the first time to get to know one another and gain an greater understanding of the project.

The newest members of the team are CheckUP's Regional Coordinators (RCs) who work closely with our health service providers in regional areas around Queensland. Recognising the close working relationships our RCs have with local industry the Gateway team thought it would be a great opportunity to build on these networks with the addition of Gateway Schools.

The team visit Bentley
Park College

While in Cairns the team took the opportunity to meet with Bentley Park College's Industry Liaison Officer, Dan Ginnaw. Dan gave the team an overview of the excellent program the college runs for their students and provided a tour of their recently commissioned Health Hub.

We would like to thank Dan for taking the time out of your busy day to meet with the team. We look forward to continuing to work with Bentley Park Collage in the future.

Student Experience Grants

CheckUP will once again open the grant program to support Health Gateway schools in the development of health career activities, events and resources for their students, and to facilitate local industry and community engagement in line with the program's objectives.

Health Gateway Schools will be eligible to apply for Student Experience Grants of up to $500 per calendar year. CheckUP will again utilise SmartyGrants to manage the grant application and reporting process, with eligibility for funding to be determined by the Health Gateway project team in accordance with the approved Grant Guidelines.

To apply, schools are required to complete an application form, which will provide details of the proposed activity, target group and anticipated outcomes. Following delivery of the activity or event, schools will be required to submit a reporting form detailing outcomes and costs involved for each approved activity.

If you have any questions or require further information, please get in touch with your  Regional Manager.

New Gateway Activity Plan and three-year MOUs - For existing Gateway Schools only

By now all schools should have received an email from Sabrina Kerr requesting an updated Gateway Activity Plan (GAP). All existing Health Gateway Schools are required to complete a GAP for 2022. The GAP is an important document as it helps to consolidate all relevant education, industry activities and connections to assist your relevant Health Gateway Program Manager to support your school effectively. It should only take around 5 minutes to complete. If you have not received this email please contact your Health Gateway Program Manager and they will arrange for the email to be forwarded to you.

Once you have returned your GAP your Health Gateway Program Manager will arrange for your new three-year Memorandum of Understanding to be sent to you or they may arrange a face to face meeting if time and weather permits.

Invitation to provide feedback about VET for Secondary Students Industry

In partnership with State and Territory Governments, the Australian Government is seeking views on  the delivery of Vocational Education and Training (VET) to secondary students to inform the development of a National VET for Secondary Students Strategy. Having your say will provide valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities to improve VET delivered to secondary students and help set policy directions for the National Strategy.

Online Feedback Forms

Online feedback forms are available for you to provide your thoughts on how to improve the quality and industry relevance of VET delivered to secondary students in the context of the development of a National Strategy. The following feedback forms are available:

  1. Industry Feedback Form - for completion by industry representatives and employers
  2. Other Stakeholders Feedback Form - for completion by any stakeholders with an interest in VET for secondary students including schools and training providers.

Regional, Rural and Remote Delivery

In addition, the department is seeking stakeholder views on the delivery of VET for secondary students in rural regional and remote localities. If you would be interested in completing a survey on delivery in these locations, you can access the survey here:  Regional, Rural and Remote Delivery Feedback Form

Research: VET for secondary school students: insights and outcomes

NCVER has released a study which investigates the models used to deliver VET to secondary students across and within jurisdictions and public and private school sectors, and reports on findings from surveys of students and parents about their motivations and aspirations. Findings from the Longitudinal Surveys of Australian Youth (LSAY) are used to draw comparisons between employment and training outcomes for different cohorts of students at age 22 and age 25. Consultations with industry stakeholders and employers on the merits of vocational education and training (VET) for secondary school students (VfSSS) programs, and case studies of a sample of government and non-government schools provide some learnings for the sector.
