Strengthening Care for Children Project Bulletin Issue #1

Welcome to the first issue of the Strengthening Care for Children (SC4C) project bulletin.

This bulletin will keep you informed of updates and news from the SC4C Project.

SC4C update

SC4C is a stepped-wedge cluster randomised controlled trial in which all participating general practices will receive the SC4C model for 12 months. Every month, one general practice will switch from standard GP care to SC4C model of care.

The project commenced in May with 59 participating GPs and 11 general practices within CESPHN. Participating practices include: Doctors on Darling, Mascot Medical, Leichhardt GP, Vitalis Family Medical Practice, Bondi Junction Medical Practice, Belmore Medical Centre, Bondi Doctors, Redfern Station Medical Centre/Hyde Park Medical Centre, Concord Medical Centre, Double Bay Doctors, Kareela Family Practice.

The project is also simultaneously being implemented in North Western Melbourne PHN region.

We would like to thank all practices for your commitment to the project and for improving paediatric care within your practice.

Highlights

  • Our first and second practices commenced and completed pre-intervention family and GP surveys in May and June respectively.
  • GP-paediatrician co-consults and case discussions commenced for our first practice in June with 31 co-consults to date.
  • Co-consults have included assessment for developmental delay, sleep disorder, eating disorder, chronic cough, abdominal pain and poor growth.
  • Case discussion topics have been developmental and behavioural issues and growth and puberty.

SC4C Paediatricians

Introducing Dr Adila Khoiri and Dr Anna van Beek. Adila and Anna will be at your practice during implementation of the model of care for 12 months.

Dr Adila Khoiri

Adila is a Consultant Paediatrician who completed her training in general paediatrics at Sydney Children's Hospital. She completed her medical degree at the University of Newcastle, Australia, and undertook her clinical fellowships in general paediatrics, Ambulatory Care and Academic Medicine at Sydney Children’s Hospital and the University of New South Wales.

She currently practices as a Consultant Paediatrician at SCHN and SLHD. She has extensive experience in managing common childhood conditions (such as asthma, eczema, growth and nutrition), developmental and behavioural paediatrics, and paediatric global health in developing and limited resource settings.

She is dedicated to working with families for the care of their child, to reach their best health by providing holistic care though evidence-based strategies.

Dr Anna van Beek

Anna is a Staff Specialist General Paediatrician at Sydney Children’s Hospital who has worked in paediatrics for over 10 years in both hospital and community settings, including at an Aboriginal outreach clinic. She is passionately committed to providing patient-centered and integrated care.

She also has extensive experience in hospital management and has completed a Master of Health Management and Bachelor of Laws. She is currently leading a large quality improvement research project to improve access to hospital services for vulnerable paediatric patients.

Outside work, she enjoys the beach, live music, travel and playing sport.

SC4C Research Assistant

Gabrielle Georgiou

Gabby is a Research Assistant at UNSW Medicine and SCHN.

She will attend practices one month prior and in the final month of practice’s 12-month period to collect family surveys (with consent) whilst families wait for consultations. Surveys are anonymous and de-identified to gain an understanding of parents' and caregivers’ perception of current paediatric care received.

SC4C Model of Care

The model involves:

  • Weekly GP–paediatrician co-consulting sessions for six months, followed by fortnightly co-consulting sessions for another six months. The SC4C paediatrician will be available for up to 7x 30-minute co-consult sessions per week.
  • Co-consults are not only for patients that GPs would usually make a referral for, but can be for any paediatric patient.
  • Paediatricians will also provide email and phone support to GPs when they are not on-site (Monday to Friday).
  • The Paediatrician will also lead monthly 60-minute RACGP accredited case study discussions.

Practices commencing the project soon should
be discussing bookings arrangements for co-consults.

Orientation meetings for onboarding practices

Orientation meetings are arranged ~6 weeks before each practice commences the project.  The purpose of these meetings are for practice staff to meet and greet the SC4C Paediatrician and discuss how the model will be embedded in practice. The Project Team will be in touch to discuss proposed orientation meeting times.

CPD activities

A Supervised Clinical Attachment (SCA) is an education activity aimed to update GPs’ specific areas of knowledge and skills by working alongside a health professional or supervisor.

Co-consults, phone and/or emails can contribute to a SCA . This is recorded as a self-directed CPD activity.

CESPHN will upload SC4C participating GPs attendance for allocation of CPD points. Click here for further information on CPD activities within SC4C project
