For BSLM, 2021 was a year of success and growth, and we are looking to build on this in 2022. This year, we are continuing our focus on health inequalities and highlighting how lifestyle medicine can positively impact the communities that exist in modern society. Stay tuned over the next few weeks and months to hear about what we have planned, such as the launch of our first course through the new Learning Academy, creation of our lifestyle medicine careers and initiatives page and going live with our annual conference. Tottenham Hotspur FC to host BSLM 2022 The first big announcement of the year revolves around BSLM 2022, and we can confirm that our annual conference will be held at the home of English Premier League football team, Tottenham Hotspur and continue our Community theme, ensuring lifestyle medicine education, gets to where it's needed the most. BSLM Executive Director, Dr Fraser Quin, has expressed his delight at partnering with such a prestigious and community-driven organisation. "I am delighted to announce the venue for BSLM 2022 is the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London. The team at Tottenham have bent over backwards to work with us so that we can deliver a hybrid conference at a world class sporting venue. What is unique about the venue is the combination of the “corporate” high quality open spaces, that can facilitate both plenary and parallel sessions in great comfort, but complimented by small intimate meeting places which will foster networking, meetings, and maintain that friendly family feel that has been so valued in the past. The Tottenham Hotspur Foundation, that does so much incredible work in schools in the community, is keen to work with BSLM, beyond the annual conference, in order to spread the Lifestyle Medicine message both locally and regionally. I'm certain there'll be some exciting announcements to be made in this area in due course." Please join us in London in September for what promises to be the best conference yet, both in terms of speakers, and venue. See you in September! So where does lifestyle medicine come in? And how do we ensure our evidence-based discipline reduces inequalities - rather than widens them? For the BSLM blog this month, GP and BSLM Learning Academy Director, Dr Ellen Fallows, argues for a new approach, based on ‘3 principles of lifestyle medicine’. To be effective we need to combine the skills of lifestyle medicine with the knowledge (the six pillars) alongside a commitment to addressing the socio-economic determinants of health. Read Ellen's blog on the socio-economic determinants of health Dr Adaeze Ifezulike awarded MBE A huge congratulations to Dr Adaeze Ifezulike after being awarded an MBE for her services to health inequalities within minority ethnic groups. This was awarded in the Queen's New Year honours and reflects the amazing work Dr Adaeze has carried out over the past year, and throughout her career. The work included the setting up mobile vaccine centres in places of faith and spearheaded the creation of a highly effective vaccination video. NICE creates new menu of treatment for those suffering from depression NICE has published new draft guidelines on the treatment of depression. The guidelines say people with depression should be able to choose what treatment option is right for them in discussion with their healthcare professional. This would be in line with an evidence-based lifestyle medicine approach and BSLM welcomes these proposals as a step in the right direction in the treatment of mental illness. Read more here.
