Gateway-2-Health is a project newsletter providing updates and key information on the Health Gateway to Industry Schools project. The Health Gateway is delivered by CheckUP in partnership with Queensland’s Department of Youth Justice, Employment, Small Business and Training (DYJESBT).
Our project team is working closely with Queensland schools and health industry employers to promote career pathways and support students' understanding of the varied and in-demand roles in the health sector. - Queensland Mental Health Week starts on Saturday!
In 2023, the Health Gateway Program has embarked on a year focused on engagement. The program has successfully formed key partnerships with various players in the health industry such as Gold Coast Health, Metro North Health, Cairns Private Hospital, Buderim Private Hospital, Australian Dental Association of Queensland, St Vincent's Private Hospital, Infin8 Care in Cairns, Mulungu Aboriginal Corporation and Mount Isa Base Hospital. These partnerships are progressing a range of collaborative initiatives that will provide secondary school students with experiential opportunities including industry site visits, health career information sessions, work experience, and school-based traineeships. Of particular note are industry tours hosted by St Vincent Private Hospital, Australian Dental Association of Queensland, Buderim Private Hospital and
Cairns Private Hospital; providing students with a practical, experiential learning opportunity that can inspire interest in healthcare careers and provide valuable insight into the health care sector. CheckUP have also collaborated with Metro North Health to provide health career information sessions for Health Gateway Schools providing valuable insights into the world of health care and offering a glimpse into the various opportunities available in this rewarding industry. In addition to this, CheckUP have partnered with Gold Coast Health, Mamu Health, Cooktown Allied Health, Infin8 Care in Cairns, Mt Isa Base Hospital and Mulungu Aboriginal Corporation to offer school-based traineeship opportunities to Health Gateway Schools across nursing, allied health assistance, administration, hospital operations and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Worker roles. This is just the
beginning of what is to come as the Health Gateway Team strive to work collaboratively with industry to inspire the next generation of healthcare professionals.

As part of the Gateway to Industry Schools Program, many of our Health Gateway schools would be aware that Department of Youth Justice, Employment, Small Business and Training (DYJESBT) requires CheckUP to submit an annual report. 📊📈 Here is some of what DYJESBT require from our incredible Gateway Schools: - Enrolments in VET health qualifications
- Participation in health gateway activities
- Teacher professional development
- Students transitioning to further education
- Engagement with health services providers and tertiary education institutions
To make this process a breeze, we ask each of our participating school to please complete a short online survey. 📝 The team are busy preparing the survey and will circulate the link to all schools in week 4, so please keep an eye out in your emails. We know that many of our schools have multiple contacts, we'd love for you to team up with your colleagues and ensure only one survey is submitted per school. 🤝 Teamwork makes the dream work! Now, we understand that surveys can sometimes be a bit tricky, so if you have any

Exciting Opportunity: Buderim Private Hospital Experience for Year 10 Students on the Sunshine Coast
We are pleased to announce the upcoming Hospital Experience event at Buderim Private Hospital! This unique opportunity is specifically designed for Year 10 students on the Sunshine Coast, and we can't wait to welcome them to the experience. Event Details: - Date: Thursday, 9 November 2023
- Target Audience: Year 10 students
- Location: Buderim Private Hospital
- Sessions: Two sessions will be held on the day - 9:00 AM to 11:30 AM & 12:00 PM to 2:30 PM
- Available Places: We have 40 places available for Health Gateway schools
Registration Information: Registration for this event will open at 9:00 AM on Friday, 6 October 2023. Registration will close on Friday, 20 October 2023, or when all places are filled. Participation Rules: Health Gateway schools will be given the opportunity to register 5 students per school initially. If spaces are not filled, we will extend the invitation to accommodate more students per school. Why Attend? This Hospital Experience event offers students a unique insight into the world of healthcare. It's an excellent opportunity for them to: - Gain hands-on experience in various hospital departments.
- Interact with healthcare professionals.
- Learn about different healthcare careers.
- Witness the cutting-edge
technology used in patient care.
- Understand the importance of teamwork in a hospital setting.
How to Register: Schools interested in participating should mark their calendars for the registration opening date on Monday 9, October 2023. A link will be forwarded to you shortly. Queensland Mental Health Week starts on Saturday!
Queensland Mental Health Week (QMHW) is held from October 7-15. QMHW is an annual awareness week that aims to shine a spotlight on individual and community mental health and wellbeing. Is your school hosting an event in October for Queensland Mental Health Week? Don’t forget to register your event on the QMHW website. By registering, your school’s event will become an official QMHW event and you’ll get access to the Queensland Mental Health Week logo to use for your event posters/flyers. Show your school’s support for mental health by registering today.
In addition to general QMHW resources, there are a range of school resources available. To help ensure teachers have the right materials to suit the needs of children in their classroom QMHW have partnered with Twinkl to create a suite of resources. These resources will open up discussions about mental health and help children learn how to express their feelings and act on those emotions in a positive way, seeking support when needed. The Health Gateway to Industry Schools program (GISP) is a project being delivered by CheckUP in partnership with Queensland’s Department of Youth Justice, Employment, Small Business and Training (DYJESBT). The project aims to develop school students’ knowledge and understanding of the varied roles available in the health workforce and improve their access to learning and experiential opportunities in Queensland’s growing health sector.
