Vol 31 No 02     05 Sept 2025

Message from the Senior Prefect Team

We were pleasantly surprised to find that we had been selected to act as Senior Prefects at The High School after the holidays.  We think that this is an amazing opportunity and we are very excited to fulfil our roles and give back to the school what it has given to us.  We should also like to welcome the new Form 1 pupils who we are sure will have an amazing time just like we have throughout our time at school.  We advise all Form 1 pupils to become active in the school community and experience everything The High School has to offer.  We also hope to make the most out of our remaining time and cannot wait to see what Form 6 has to offer us.

International Tag Rugby

This summer these High School pupils were selected to represent Ireland on the Irish Mixed 18s Touch Rugby team - a remarkable achievement. The team travelled to the 2025 Atlantic Youth Touch Cup, an international tournament showcasing some of the best young talent in the sport. After a series of thrilling matches, the Mixed 18s squad made their way into the final- and then went one step further, clinching Gold. This victory was far more than just a medal. It marked the first time an Irish junior team has ever secured Gold at a major international touch rugby competition. Well done!

International Cricket

Irish cricket star and High School past pupil Orla Prendergast (HSD, 2014–20) has been nominated for the International Cricket Council's ICC Player of the Month award for August 2025! The 23-year-old shone as the standout player in Ireland's T20I series versus Pakistan, scoring 144 runs and taking four wickets. She is competing with Iris Zwilling from the Netherlands and Muneeba Ali from Pakistan. Congratulations, Orla!

Home Run 2025

Calling all pupils: any year group, any level of fitness! The Dublin Simon Fun Run is on Saturday 4 October in the Phoenix Park.  We are trying to get as many pupils to be part of The High School team as possible.  This is an important fundraiser for the Simon Community and a fun occasion. Mums, dads, brothers, sisters, and dogs are welcome to come along and support the charity by walking, jogging, running, or racing at the event. There will be a prize for the pupil who raises the most money! Please see Ms Hutchinson Edgar in A22 to sign up or for more information. Alternatively, you can message her directly on MS Teams.

Form 4 Excursion

On Monday morning Form 4 pupils went on the Senior Cycle PE Adventure Pursuits excursion. Half of the year group went to Russborough House and the other half went to Killiney Beach. I went to the former! Once we got there, we were split into groups of six. The people there told us that all six groups were in competition with one another. Two groups started off with canoeing at the lake. They were trying to beat each other, but Group One won.

After canoeing, Group One went ziplining, which also involved a game where we had two coloured balls and had to get each ball into a hoop set up at different points. Once everyone had a turn on the zipline, we had our lunch. After lunch, the instructor brought us to a rock-climbing game where, if we reached the top, we earned ten points and if we climbed the side walls, we could score twenty or more depending on how far we got. Fifteen of us from the group reached the top of the main rock-climbing structure, and one person made it halfway up the side wall, so we earned an extra twenty points. After rock climbing, we went to a parkour course where we had to avoid touching the wire. Following the parkour course, we moved on to archery. We were doing very well. After all the activities, the instructors gathered everyone together and announced the results.

We had a lot of fun during our trip to Russborough House, and we owe a big thank you to the teachers who accompanied us and to the instructors who gave their time to make the day so enjoyable.

Environmental Sustainability

I am really excited to be taking on the middle management role of Assistant Principal for Environmental Sustainability at The High School. I am also really grateful that so many staff are interested and want to be involved. I have met both with staff and with our Green Schools Committee of pupils, and I will of course be talking to other members of our school community throughout the year.

There are lots of ideas which we will be rolling out over the year, our first being Sustainability Week starting on Monday 15 September. One part of this is to encourage people to cycle, walk, or take public transport to school, though of course some might not be able to do so. Another project I am looking at bringing to the community this year is a tree project that everyone can be involved in, so watch out for that.

Environmental issues are so relevant in today’s world. We all know how important it is for our government to reach our targets around greenhouse emissions and how we all need to, in our own lives, consider the impact we are having on the planet. There are many interconnected issues including the role of women in decision making, ongoing conflicts, and listening to indigenous community voices. For me the education piece of the role is also really significant.  It all comes down to respecting the living world as well as each other and protecting the planet for future generations. I hope to encourage everyone to listen, learn, and act for a greener, cleaner, and fairer future for everyone and for The High School to be a small but significant place for growing that kind of mindset.

Argentinian Visit

On Thursday we had the excitement of hosting a visiting school from Argentina! The Senior 1 and 2 (Girls) played against St Gregory’s in friendly hockey matches. The Senior 1s lost narrowly 1-0 while the Senior 2s won 2-0. What a great start to our season! The Junior Cup Team (Boys) played a tight game of rugby but were undefeated in the end. Each school entertained the other with musical performances in The Reynolds Hall, and then it was time to bid our new friends goodbye. We wish them well as they continue on their European tour.

Form 1 Home Economics

Last week, newly-enrolled Form 1 pupils enjoyed their first day of baking in Home Economics. They had a fun and creative time making colourful cookies, with each pupil showing great enthusiasm and paying careful attention to detail as they crafted their tasty treats.  Well done to all for their hard work and creativity in the kitchen.
