History

Like many cathedral cities Salisbury has been an important settlement for many centuries from the Iron Ages to the Romans and early Christians.

In 1075 the first bishop of Salisbury brought the surrounding counties into a single diocese and began the construction of the first Salisbury Cathedral. Development continued until the building of the current now magnificent Salisbury Cathedral that  has been welcoming visitors since 1227. 

Salisbury also became known as a place of pilgrimage. After 1457, when one of the earliest Bishops, Osmund, was made a saint by the Pope.  Sick people later visited Saint Osmund’s tomb and highly decorated shrine hoping to be cured.

Between about 1300 and 1329 they made the tower higher and added a spire. At 404 feet it is now the tallest spire in England. The  whole story is one of stunning architecture and extraordinary human efforts of people, rich and poor, famous and unknown  who have worshipped and worked here for centuries.

While there is a lot to see both in the city and surrounding areas take a little time to try and understand the skills and physical endeavors of the generations that have created these magnificent structures and embedded them with centuries of history that we can all too often take for granted .

Getting there

Salisbury is accessible by train, bus or car and has convenient connections from major cities and airports.

Getting here by road

Salisbury is easily accessible by car and is approximately 90 minutes' drive from central London. 

By Train 

The city is also on the mainline railway lines for the London Waterloo to Exeter St Davids route and the Portsmouth Harbour to Cardiff Central route, with regular trains arriving to our city.

Things to do

Places to see

Old Sarum 

Old Sarum is one of the most historically important sites in southern England with its mighty prehistoric outer ramparts, raised by Iron Age people in about 400 BC. At the center there is the huge Norman inner mound and ditch, founded by William the Conqueror and was the footprint for the first Salisbury Cathedral
