LIFESTYLE MEDICINE IN FOCUSThe Mediterranean Diet really is that good for you. Here's Why.By Dani Blum, New York TimesThe Mediterranean Diet has become the bedrock of virtuous eating. In this article, experts answer common questions about how it leads to better health. What is the Mediterranean Diet? The Mediterranean diet isn’t as much a strict meal plan as it is a lifestyle, with the diet prioritising whole grains, fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts, herbs, spices and olive oil. Fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids, like salmon, sardines and tuna, are the preferred animal protein source. Other lean animal proteins, like chicken or turkey, are eaten to a lesser extent. What are the health benefits? A number of rigorous studies have found that the Mediterranean diet contributes to better health, and in particular better heart health, in a variety of ways. Research has also found that the diet can protect against oxidative stress, which can cause DNA damage that contributes to chronic conditions like neurological disease and cancer. And some studies suggest it can help reduce the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes. The full article, answering even more questions on the Mediterranean diet, can be found through the link below. Which is why, at 38, I've qualified as a personal trainer By Devi Sridhar, The Guardian After working under intense pressure and scrutiny during the pandemic, I’m helping people with the most effective health intervention there is – exercise. Exercise is the most effective intervention to stay healthy and avoid disease and chronic pain. If you add physical activity to a balanced diet, sleep and friends, that is a recipe for good physical and mental health. No pain, no gain Dr Sheena Fraser Pain is a topic that has always interested me, possibly because I have always felt like a bit of an outsider in my views on analgesia (pain killers). My family are a bit unusual in the way we manage pain. My parents have always argued that pain is good for us, it lets us know there is a problem and we should listen to our body and not mask this pain. Understanding and reimagining sleep and its disorders - Creative workshop series If you are experiencing difficulties with your sleep and have connections to the Newcastle area, do join this creative workshop series.
