Click here Welcome member toYour home of lifestyle medicine news HEADLINE NEWSNursing and Lifestyle MedicineThere is no doubt that nurses in this country experience a severe lack of support in a variety of ways, with pay, working conditions and training all critical factors that have come under scrutiny. It is no coincidence therefore, to see that Nurses have an increased risk for non-communicable diseases, and have a higher prevalence to obesity, unhealthy eating habits and insufficient physical activity. This causes concern for our colleagues and creates strain on nursing as an industry. Nurses are an integral part of the healthcare backbone that ensures our families, our communities and our day-to-day livelihoods can prosper. BSLM are attracting many nurses to gain the knowledge and skills to support their patients with chronic illness utilising the key lifestyle medicine principles but we’d love to reach each and every nurse throughout UK and beyond and are grateful for your support in sharing this far and wide. This nursing campaign is aligned with BSLM’s wider movement, which looks to integrate evidenced-based lifestyle medicine measures throughout all healthcare practices. Registered Nurses can claim 50% off BSLM Membership using code “NURSE50” and additionally can claim a free Lifestyle Medicine Overview course by clicking the relevant link below and entering code “OVERFREE” at checkout. May's Featured VideoNursing and Lifestyle Medicine | Dr Crystal Oldman CBELIFESTYLE MEDICINE IN FOCUSActivity snacking may help with type-1 diabetesA study recently found that walking for just 3 minutes every half hour could improve blood sugar levels. With these "activity snacks", blood sugar levels lowered after regular walking breaks over a seven hour period, meaning they could serve as practical and free methods to bring about changes to health. This research, by Diabetes UK, suggested that even seemingly small activities such as walking phone calls can have a positive impact on blood glucose levels. With type-1 Diabetes affecting over 400,000 people in the UK alone, these smaller behavioural changes can serve as an effective way to change how it affects people. A reminder that the submission deadline for abstracts is Friday 16th June. Humza Awan is exploring whether the peer-mentoring and clinically focused teaching sessions are an effective tool in building the confidence of medical students during a crucial stage at the beginning of their careers. Explaining the reasoning for his project, Humza noted, “Medical education is crucial in ensuring the doctors of tomorrow have the skills needed to provide good holistic care for patients." Swetha Kannan is researching just how impactful that can be to our health and wellbeing. This research takes a particular focus two key pillars of lifestyle medicine - minimising harmful substances and sleep. “Currently being a medical student, high-yield public health topics interest me. Popularly known as vape, e-cigarettes are a growing menace among the teen population. Lack of knowledge and awareness are causing more and more teens to succumb to this hazardous behaviour. There are many harmful effects of e-cigs, my review aims to highlight its effects on sleep" Lifestyle Medicine in Practice: How you can bring your Lifestyle Medicine techniques into the real-worldFEATURED BSLM EVENTSHead to the dedicated BSLM events page for the full list of upcoming events Beat the Root Cause of Disease with DREAMS Wednesday 24th May | 7pm - 8pm | Online on Zoom Stand for Health | Feature at BSLM 2023 With the success of last year’s Changemakers campaign, we are once again showcasing your lifestyle medicine videos, this time integrated into our new Health campaign which features ‘Stand for Health’.
